passenger side axle play? How much is tolerable?

I too have been plagued with the clunking popping sounds. Turning, straight over bumps, reverse out of driveway. I have checked all bolts, nuts, bushings, ball joints, endlinks, subframe brace, struts. The only thing I can find is that my passenger axle has about 2mm of play on the shaft and about 3mm of play out of the tranny. I know there is a snap ring holding the axle in but how could I have play? Is there a tolerance for this? Could something be wrong in the tranny?

Yes, but it definately sounds like its coming from under the car. I can feel it through the floor board. It would be nice after all the clunking threads if there was one where everyone with these problems would post their fix.
