Quarter Master 8-leg/ Push Style Clutch Issue on Stroker Engines
Bumping this up.
I have a brand new QM I bought in 2011 and after installing everything I am having an issue with the clutch.
It's acting like its slipping. As soon as the car gets into power it just revs up. No attempt to grab at all. I checked the clearance and it was spot on at 0.140". Which is the exact minimum allowed with 7.25" clutches according to the chart on the QM install instructions.
Everything is brand new. Car is a 2.3 on an OEM 100mm crank.
I have yet to re check the tob clearances after I put all of 8 MILES on the clutch.
But with how its acting I would say I'm having the issue of the tob pushing too far into the pressure plate.
Anyone else have a similar issue? Howd you resolve it?
I am going to contact QM on Monday. I think this is completely insane that my brand new $1500 clutch is having an engagement issue.

After re-reading the entire thread,
Looks like material from the center of the HTB base (black section) needs to be machined?
And NOT the piston of the HTB itself. Is that correct?
I am local (15 mins away) to QM and I can guarantee I will figure this issue out once and for all.
Just need some feedback here guys.

So sorry I am not understanding, did that remedy your problem?
After talking with Geoff Tickes for the 3rd day in a row it's almost like he completely forgot my issue. (The first 2 days we were both in agreement that the bearing had a clearence issue)
And now Geoff Tickets is telling me my clearence is spot on (.140") So I'm not sure what's going on there.
Its almost like he just ignored the fact that we had multiple conversations over the phone and in person about this HTOB having clearence issues with the 100mm 4g64 crank.
I also had a contaminated clutch plate due to assembly lube from my flywheel bolts. So they are going to bake that off for me.
But I'll see where this goes I guess.
After getting off of the phone with QM for the 2nd time today, I am NOT VERY HAPPY.
I had to yet again explain to Jerry in the repair department about machining the HTOB. Which is think is nuts consodering I went into full detail with Geoff Tickes from the technical department.
Geoff Tickes even agreed with me that my disengagement issue is a known issue. So why all of a sudden am I once again, explaining the issue with Jerry from repairs?
This company clearly doesn't hold itself to the standard that it once did.

I have a 2.3 and last year I installed the QM 8-leg. My clearance wasn't where I wanted it to be so I machined the back of the HRB to get it around .200". I figured an extra 0.040" wouldn't push the piston past the seal and would get some extra wear out of the discs if in fact the short life of a qm was caused by resting pressure of the fingers against the hrb when the clutch gets towards the end of it's life.
BTW I dunno how you guys street drive this clutch. After 2 of these QM's I'm completely done with them. I can't stand it. They do exactly what you want them to do at the track but are garbage on the street. I even have the street flywheel (22 lb assembly). I'm gonna try my luck with the OS Giken R2CD. Currently making 650 hp and 540 tq on a FP black.

Wow that's very interesting. Guess this is not the clutch for a 2.3. Geoff made it very clear that this was designed around an original (88mm) crank.
And agree with the second part. I have the race flywheel and it was near impossible to drive on the street. If I ever get this clearence issue figured out I guess I will run the QM for a little because of funds right now.
Well good luck with that clutch and thanks for the information.

And I think you mean extra 0.060"? Spec clearance is min 0.140" according to QM.

Just to leave a final word on here,
QM told me they did not machined any of my HTOB.
But somehow my clearance are spot on now. ...I think thats strange. (And kind of hard to believe, considering I seen with my own eyes an obvious clearance issue!)
Anyway the technician at a local performance shop who reinstalled the clutch told me "I dont even know how to check for that clearance". Which did not exactly put me at ease.
But amazingly everything is good so far. So
once again to QM and their customer service. Although it was not as prompt as I would of hoped, It all turned out alright in the end.
