GSC S3 vs. Kelford 280

Hey guys,

I bought a ported head, and when the head is off I would like to upgrade my cams from S2s as I have a 2.4L and have seen/heard that there's little loss down low by switching to 280s.

I originally wanted to pick up S3's, however, I have a great opportunity to pick up some Kelford 280s. I'm aware that S2's are very similar to Kelford 272's, so I wanted to see just how similar Kelford 280s are to GSC S3s.

Any input is appreciated!

Thanks!

This doesnt exactly answer your question, but it should give you some insight:

On my 2.3L / e85, i went from k272's > k280's > S2's

The k280's made more top end, but lacked a lot of the "torque hit" of the k272's

on my car, the S2's were "middle of the road" between the 2 kelfords = more top end power than than the 272's, SLIGHTLY less tq than the 272's.

I couldnt find a power compare readily available in my data folder, otherwise i would have posted it.

Thanks Aby, that was actually really helpful, as I can't decide if I want to stick with my S2s or go 280 on my 2.4L.

Hmmmm.

If you can get Kelford 280s for a good price, I'd go for it. Strokers work great with big cams. May also look into Tomei 270s or 280s which MAP has for a great price if you PM them, nice 11.5mm lift on either set.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I will completely break even (if not make money) selling my S2s for the Kelford 280s, so I think I'm going to go ahead and do it.

The Kelford 280s have 11.5mm of lift as well!

S3's have a higher lift and, more importantly, a larger duration than Kelford 280's. You should just grab some Kelford 288's and don't look back.

Hurrr.....

S3's have 280 advertised duration with 11.5mm of peak lift.
K280s have 280 advertised duration with 11.5mm of peak lift.

They're extremely similar cams, I just wanted to see if anyone had a performance comparison between the two.

I'm already on the fence about 280s in general in a damn street car I'm sure those 288s are ridiculous.

S3's are 11.7mm lift. I have the cam card from GSC stating as such.

I believe yah. I was just going off of what appears to be an older version of the S3's from MAP's website.

Sweet, forgot about that thread. Looks like the actual 280 intake Kelford cam has the same duration @1mm than the GSC 280. Well that's weird..

The hard numbers in the cam thread are up to date and VERY accurate. Just some more info to arm yourself with in your decision. I run s3's in my toy and love them. Very well mannered, and NASTY out the top.
