Help Choosing EBC after MBC Fail

Hey guys so today i think I came close to destroying my evo I noticed the last couple of days my turbo seemed to be sputtering a bit when boost kicks in and today on the way home from work I started boosting and it felt kinda like i hit fuel cut and there was a terrible shutter. I tried to boost again and noticed something was wrong when the DV sounded much louder than usual. After a few pulls I looked at my boost gauge and it was maxing out way past the set limit of 22 psi.

So long story short I tried adjusting my MBC to no avail, even switched to my other MBC which apparently was shipped with out a spring so i took my original one apart and saw the ball was stuck at the bottom and the breather hole had a rust colored dust/coating inside and the chrome on the ball had fused to the spring. So I cleaned it with a pipe cleaner, re-installed and back to normal.

So my question was what EBC is best? Ive been looking at AEM TruBoost and Grimspeed EBC Solenoid and am wondering how difficult they are to install? Will I need to retune? How is the boost dialed in? Do you connect to WGA and Turbo nipple like an MBC? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Ill also be searching because this has probably been covered before but any comments would be great!

Grimspeed all the way! Yes you will have to retune.

So ill need to retune because when you plug into factory solenoid wiring it will be running the same boost as it did from the factory ecu setting? So can you adjust with ecuflash or evo scan because i already have a tactrix cable? and it would save me a trip to Lansdale! Since My tune is for 22 psi will I be running really rich till I adjust? Back to driving like a grandma for awhile I guess

fit grimspeed solenoid and retune your car. If you want to fit boost controller, then go for HKS EVC6. I tried most of the boost controllers and this one is my favorite. Holds perfectly stable boost + many option to tune.

Yeah. I would only consider the HKS EVC-6 if looking for an EBC. Incidentally, what brand of MBC was it that failed on you?

EVC6 is cool but it was way to complicated for me. Could never get it set right. Sold it and went ECU controlled boost. Haven't looked back.

Exactly, Smurfster! The EVC-6 is the best EBC, but too complex to setup properly. There is only a few guys that have been able to master the intricacies of proper setup on the HKS EVC-6. It is this complexity of optimizing program set up that would scare me from going this route.

I agree with you on the modified ECU boost control being one of the better options. Do you happen to know, what is up with what is called "Hybrid Boost Control"? How does that work?

Turbosmart E-boost is a good option.

Before you go through tuning hassles of EBC's you should consider what happened to your MBC.

The rust is clear that you did not do any maintenance on your MBC.

Keep in mind the MBC's have less parts to fail.

you are so right I didn't realize that an mbc needs to be maintained it was a NXS Motorsports mbc and from the looks of it the ball fused to the spring and made an indent in the ball and even after I cleaned it it was acting very erratic and eventually got stuck again so luckily my I have a turbo smart tee and installed that. But this tee is very erratic too sometimes 18 psi sometime 23 under wot. My tune is for 22psi so a little extra won't hurt right? I also have a apexi turbo timer which has a afr gauge does anyone know what afr would be considered unsafe? I've seen it go as low as 12.1 and if it spikes too much wouldn't I get a lean code?

evc is way too expensive and complicated and it has NO ties to the factory ecu to take action if there is a problem.

I would go with a tactrix 3 port unit
