Running right/idling perfect is in the tune, not from a standalone.

However aem will be your best choice if u choose to go standalone

I am running AEM EMS Series 1 also with out issues. Startup, Idle, and Cruise are all great. It is all about the tune.

Aem is a joke compared to many others. Proefi, haltech, motech, vipec, etc.

Those are all great units as well. AEM just released there Infinity 10 which is on par with the Pro EFI units.

With any standalone if you are not going to do the tuning, then you should find out what your local tuner recommends the most. Run that. All the units listed in this thread are awesome, they all do about the same things, however if you go to the AEM Forums there are tons of threads about them, the same cannot be said for the others.

As used AEM Series 1 is about 500-700 bucks. A used series 2 is about 1000-1200 bucks, I dont see many of the others pop up used, but new they all start around 1500 and up. The Pro EFI is about 2000 new.

Pro Efi if you have the money for it. I was going to run a proefi but my build time got crunched due to the shootout. Might switch out my aem somewhere down the line.

Many people have used the AEM series 1 with great success. It is easily the most inexpensive option to have full stand alone control, particularly when there are so many now available on the used market. The newer AEM models have a smaller installed base, and fewer people with experience using and tuning them, although they are similar to the Series 1.

The ProEFI is a solid EMS, but is newer, has a small installed base, fewer dealers, and ProEFI will not sell to some shops at all. Some who tune it will lock the tune and the owner has no ability to tune for any changes. Unless you have a dealer nearby whom you like and trust and he will keep the tune "open", I'd think long and hard before going that route. The cost is high, too.

Haltech has some supporters, but it's not widely used for Evos as far as I can tell, except in specific locations where dealers support it. I think AWDMike uses them a lot in FL, though...

Motec is the king of widely available standalones. It has the most capabilities, and is bulletproof. It has a well thought out programming system that works. No bugs. It also costs 2-3x what a new AEM will cost.

Sounds to me like you just need to spend the money on a good competent tuner for your stock ecu. Anymore unless you're running 650+whp there is almost no need for a standalone.

Driveability is 10x better on a standalone and they feel lile they give you 50lb/ft on the bottom end.
