Evo 9 MR issues
Evo 9 MR issues
Hey everybody! This thread is for my brother who is actually having problems with his evo. He bought his 9 MR with 48k miles a couple months ago and has started having some issues. I will try to describe the best I can the issues he is having below.
He lost his 4th gear one day randomly. He said it was hard to get into 3rd aswell but no grinding at all. Then all of a sudden his 4th gear came back and he is able to grab it if he shifts slowly into 4th.
He had an issue when boosting aswell. I was deployed at the time when he was describing it to me but he said when he would go full throttle the car would over boost to something like 30+psi and would blow his ic pipe loose or blow his BOV completely off. He tried 2 different boost controllers and neither fixed the issue. He replaced something on the wastegate aswell (not sure exactly) and that didnt fix it. He ended up routing past the bov to his wga and is running on just stock 9 turbo wastegate pressure.
Any info to help troubleshoot would be appreciated! I know very little about the issues other than what I described but I can ask him questions if anyone wants to know anything else about the problems to help find solutions.
Thanks

It's such common issue, inexperienced 'hard' driving often lead to busting syncrho rings & shift sleeves. You need to disassemble & inspect the tranny & replace any damaged rings/sleeves.
As for the boost issue, it's possible that the previous owner had installed a smaller boost pill to increase boost.

Im not sure how he drives the car really...it is an evo though. I thought it might had been a syncro in the trans but I have never had an issue like that so wasnt sure. For the boost though I dont really know. I will have him inspect to see if anything was messed with. I do know the prior owner had a few things done to the car.
