radiator fan issue

I was getting tuned and while my car was idling I noticed the radiator fan was not coming on and the motor was starting to overheat. Then all of a sudden it came on. Relieved it came on but by the time it came on the motor was already really hot. Checked the controller its getting power from input side but was not from the output. Then the fan came on again. Anyone have any idea what it could be??

Are you running a slim fan or OEM? Try turning on the A/C to make sure it's turning on while the car is running.

Some slim fans, don't produce enough power to cool down our engines opposed to the OEM fan. I would start by checking to make sure your sensors are not bad first, if not the radiator fan motor could be on its way out.

It was the fan control relay. I ended up hardwiring the fan so that I comes on and stays on while the car is running. Only downside is the fan will stay on for about 5 seconds after the car cuts off. eventually I will wire in a manual fan switch..but im not too worried about it right now.

Put back a proper coolant fan controller and run a better ground to the coolant temp sensor. I bet that works!

Come on, just find the issue and fix it properly. Do what ^^^ he said.

In hind sight I don't see how the downside is your fan running +5sec opposed to manually having to run it. But a fan running constantly will not keep your engine at optimum temps, it will over cool it in some instances.

Hope you figure it out!

Gtijoe I appreciate you concern and had I had a fan controller in my pocket when it started over heating I would have most certainly have fixed it properly. I did what I had to do the other day to get the cat home safely and able to drive until I wire in a manual switch or put another fan controller in. When I wrote this I was looking for help with diagnosis. I'm not really looking for opinions on how I got it home or how I fixed the problem. Also I live in Georgia not the coldest state in the country. The amount of time im on the road im pretty sure the engine stays at a pretty optimum temp.
