Add AYC to the DSM!

Well, since I am driving a DSM for a while and it is slightly modified, one of the things that will make it much better is an active diff in the rear. If doesn't bring an EVO here in the US with the active diffs, then there will be no reason for me to get it, and I would try to build one for my car instead.

As of the start, there is an AYC from the VII and axles (if those from VII won't fit) will have to be build specially for it. Another parts that will be reused from the VII are steering angle sensor and maybe something else that I can't think of it right now.

The control unit will have to be build from the scratch. I do have a background in automation and control systems, so some kind of a digital controller could be built for cheep money. The biggest problem will be to tune the thing and to make it to do what it should be doing. I guess a lot of testing will be in schedule!

So, right now, this is just an idea, but I do see my self playing with it for several reasons. First, it would be so much fun to create something like that!! Second, if it works at the end, my car would be even faster. If it works well after a while, someone else might be willing to have too, so...

Well, just something for the thoughts...

Enjoy!

If you're going to fit an AYC, you will also need the fluid reservoirs and AYC pumps, amongst other things..

I have an evo 6.5 and the AYC is brilliant. The later models have different AYC's. The Evo 9's here in Australia have super AYC, and active centre diff; which makes quite a nimble car out of what is quite a heavy car (in comparison to my 6.5 anyway)..

The AYC and periphery adds a reasonable amount of weight to the car compared to a regular mechanical LSD.

Homebrewing a control system for an AYC would be quite a lot of work. There has been some brilliant engineering go into the factory control system (many man years of engineering, testing and development).

Another part you'll need if using the factory getup is the accelerometers that are connected to the AYC (x-y, and x-z axis). These are just behind the gearstick in the 6.5. I think that the ABS wheel speed sensors are also integrated, along with steering angle etc, as someone already mentioned... The factory system would probably be designed based on an approximate weight of a 6.5 too. The extra weight of the 9 might make some of the calculations a little out..

I personally think it would be easier to get a wrecked 9 from Japan and pull the AYC bits off it and fit to yours than trying to retrofit a TME AYC + control.

Cheers
Scott.

AYC rear diffs are really weak! guys in the UK have been blowing them into litle bits for years now! the RS (dosen't have it) is MUCH stornger and what most are running i think. i think i heard somewhere that the AYC rear diff is only 2mm think in some places, and these are stress areas!

have a look and ask some questions on the lancerregister.co.uk

thanks Chris.
