Exclamation EVO 8 5MT 5th gear Problem

Hey Guys, recently bought my evo 8 with a 5th gear problem. Previous owner said 5th gear went out on him out of nowhere, he claims. Problem i have is that 5th gear wont go in AT ALL. Gear will Not go in when the clutch is in, not even when the car is off. I'm stumped since this is my first EVO and have little mechanical knowledge on them.

**NOTE**
All other gears go in just fine. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and reverse.

Any Suggestions?? I checked the linkages, with the bit mechanical expertise that i have, and seems fine to me. Next thing i'd probably check would be the shifter box..?
And finally if all seem good, i guess id have to buy a used transmission.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it dont go into 5th even with the car off, id say shifter fork, or slider issue. Parts are cheap, actualy its just getting the trans off and apart. If it goes into 5th with car off and not while running its a syncro, you can double clutch and RPM match to see.

Btw, 5th and reverse share a shift Rail, and the shift fork and slider.

When mine ran low on oil 5th gear bearing Blew apart in the trans and it became stuck in 5th gear, quite a experience lol, on the high way.

Could also be something easy thou, like checking to make sure the shifter mechanism under the hood isnt being blocked by something, ive heard of some being blocked by the After market UICP"s.

I've heard that 5th gear and reverse shared the same part and that it might be something real easy. I guess i have to put a wrench on it.

Do you possibly think it can be the shifter box as well?? Or cables?

They do share the same parts, the slider does not fully go thru thou to reverse so if its jacked up on the 5th gear side, it could still go into Reverse.

You could check the shifter box and cable with out dropping the trans, thats pretty easy. Id disconnect the cables and try shifting the lever manually in to all the gears, you could have someone press the clutch to make it easier too.
