alternator might be going out

Last couple of days I noticed my gauge read 11.3 to 12.9 volts when the car is running, rarely tho maybe for a second or two and it goes back to normal and it reads 13.8 or above. When the vehicle is off its at 12 volts. Prosport gauge hooked up to the alternator wire going to the battery.. are these the symptoms of a alternator thats going bad. I did read the 'how to' thread and its a pita to swap it out.

I am taking off the head (intake and exhaust manifold) in a month, has anybody done it from up top?

battery should always read about 14 volts when the car is running as an indicator the alternator is working. very weird that it shows that for 2 seconds sometimes.

I have this problem too; my volt meter will be reading 14v but it periodically drops to 13v or so for a few tenths of a second. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to when it does it, it's always when it's idleing though. I've had this problem for quite some time now but I don't think it's my alternator. I would think it's a loose connection somewhere - anyone else have this problem or know where to look?

We've tried to do it up top and maybe it'd be possible with the head off and such...

Thats exactly what mine does, no pattern whatsoever. Weird part about it it doesnt act up at idle, only at a normal cruising speed. Lights dont dim or the battery light doesnt come on. If it starts to act up really bad ill check the alternator. In the mean time im going to find the MR oem volt gauge and hook it up temporarily
