Need a crate motor!

whats up fellas... long story short I need a new block

I am looking to drop in a completely new motor from scratch... i am hoping to build a street evo that would be able to pass smog (if it doesn't not really an issue but preferred). I live out in SoCal so smog lol. I have already checked some sites out like DSM Graveyard, AMS, Bushcur... etc and i havent really put a price limit on the build thus far so... im just trying to figure which way i want to attack it.

Also, what would be pros and cons of replacing just the short block VS dropping in a complete crate motor with brand new head, turbo, etc.? My goal is to get to the 400whp-500whp range on pump 91 gas and probably get a dual map for E85 . What would be the best route to go with as far as internals (pistons, rods, crankshafts) and im not really a fan of a stroker motors.

The car will be driven a lot so reliability is also important.

Thanks in advance for any advice

why not just buy a used block and throw some manley i beams, wiseco hd, and a stock crank and youll be set. will probly be your cheapest route and will get you to where you want to be on the 400-500 range without the rods blowing out again.

also to be in that range of hp it will be alot easier to get there with an aftermarket turbo as to a stock, so thats another reason to not go with a full crate motor and another stock turbo

Whatever you do stay away from Slowboy motors... if I were to recommend a block, I’d go with MAP Performance or English Racing.. That’s just my .02 Cents as far as staying Cali legal.. its hard I was in the same boat as you.. I was trying for a 500AWHP Stock Appearing engine bay but it’s pretty hard to do.. Not to say it can’t be done.. I shaved my cam gear cover, got a stock appearing turbo, undercover COP, ported my Exhaust Mani. And a couple other things to appear stock but the sound definitely gives it away at those power levels…

Why can you not have the current block rebuilt?

you might benefit from checking out the vendors used parts section of the marketplace. they generally have blocks up in there for good prices.
