Evo 8 Thermostat Diameter Size

MY sons 03 Evo 8 is in the shop getting a new head gasket so we decided to change the thermostat. The only problem is that the new one and everyone listed for that car are too small in diameter. The one that is in the car now is kind of shorter and fatter than the replacement. Old one measures just over 2.5 in diameter and the new one is 2.2 in diameter. Does anyone know why this is? Thanks in advance.

It's because you're buying your 'stats from a parts store.

O'Reilly lists a Beck/Arnley for special order, that one fits. Otherwise, just go to the dealer.

I had to go to mitsubishi for it. The parts stores have it listed wrong.

Does anyone know about the quality/experience of the Beck/Arnley (143-0817) evo 9 thermostat vs oem (MD363571)?

oem is $57 and Beck/Arnley $45 but the benefit besides the lower cost is able to get local without waiting over a week to get online?

Thanks!

Status update:
So I ordered the Beck/Arnley evo 9 thermostat because I couldn't get myself to pay $55 for oem one and it cost me $6.
Amazon.com: Beck Arnley 143-0817 Engine Coolant Thermostat: Automotive Amazon.com: Beck Arnley 143-0817 Engine Coolant Thermostat: Automotive

My temperature gauge went higher than it was before with the RALLIART thermostat, but still no heat! I ran across a post on an evo facebook group that evo 8 HAVAC temperature control cable and gears are a bad design and Mitsu released a new design. My knob was stuck on cold, thus no heat.

So flipping manually until I order the new gears and cable; see youtube video:

Thanks!
