**Need Help with Intake Cam** Tech Plz
Forum!
This is pretty serious. My mechanic just called me to tell me that the intake cam for my Evo 9 will not fit into the intake cam sprocket and that it is a fraction of a millimeter too fat. He wants to know if he can machine it down to mate up properly. I need feedback on this one fast!
The cam in question is a 264 Greddy Easy Cam (no flaming please). It says it's for the 9 on the box, says it's for the 9 on the camshaft, and has the proper serial.

Yes, that is exactly it. It's under a millimeter too big to slide into the recess in the Intake Sprocket (MIVEC). This entire ordeal is driving me to drink (oh wait I can't; my car is in the shop lol).
This is gonna sound stupid but make sure he has the right cam gear going on the right cam. I mean I don't wanna insult him by no means but people do it all the time. See if it will fit in the other cam. if that doesn't work then its a bolt issue. I have never used handy cams so its tough to really suggest being never had the problem. Another thing is too see if the other bolt don't fit. Maybe the cam bolts are different. Tough to say and if the other one don't work have him machine it down shouldn't be an issue as long as he knows wtf he is doing

Well I hope you guys figure it out. I mean I don't have a 9 so its tough to say. I know he will do his best. Let him know its an odd situation and me personally have never heard of cam bolts not fitting. It could be that its a casting mistake who knows. Hope all gets fixed though.
curedsm, it's not the bolt is the actual cam gear. The end of the camshaft facing the cam gear, the one with the dowel pins, is too fat to slip into the intake cam gear.
Oh ok that makes since then yeah I got you now yeah mill that **** out and make it fit. Shouldn't be an issue. Only time it maybe an issue is if you ever swap cams again, but hopefully by that time you will have adjustable cam gears and no worrys. You should be good to go. I was under the impression that was the bolt itself hahaha.
I'll call him and tell him. He's got machinist skills as well. I just want to feel the torque difference (even though that feeling lasts for like a week and then just melts into regular driving only to become apparent again when you nearly kill yourself or blow away another car).
Yes, they both say evo9 and I checked them meticulously for the telltale evo 8 or 7 or something other than a 9 on them long before I took them to the mechanic.
