How to break in a brand new 4g63 evo 8
When detergent oil was developed you always broke in an engine with non detergent oil. Now, with synthetic oil on the market you must break in an engine with detergent oil. You won't be able to use synthetic oil as a break in lubricant until a new product comes along.
The Amsoil Break-In oil is apparently good. Its an SAE30 weight oil, fortified with high zddp contents. They do not recommend it for the initial startup though becasue it would be a waste of money. But got the 1000 miles of street use, its not a bad idea. We're going to use that on my brother's 240SX which recently got rebuilt.
Someone already mentioned there is specific break in oil, sounds inexpensive compared to what you spent on an engine and worth it. These may sound corny compared to the other good pieces of advice above but I've always run these 2 products on new engines. They are cheap and why not:
FilterMag
I think RA300 is what I had on my EVO:

Also a magnetic drain plug bolt:

Hope those help, good luck with the new engine. Hope it's a monster.

I built my evo8 4g63 , have done 600 kms. The engine starts to feel heavy as the revs go past 3500 rpm till 4200 rpm. I didnt do the short acceleration burst. Mostly driven it between 2k till 3.5k rpm up till now with no boost.
Now ill start to give the motor some boost but i am worried about this heavy feeling.
Could this be caused by a very tightened timing belt ?

I was referring to the heavy noise i am getting when i hit over 4k, sounds like the car is straining to get there, but it do and the exhaust noise seems way heavier at that rpm level than usual.I currently at 500 break in point ready to do another oil change and continue i was wondering could this be the timing belt needs adjusting? anyone please appreciate the FB!
