I'm assuming you're using an SAFC-II which is reading the ECU's knock reading. The knock sensor is very sensitive and just because it's reading knock doesn't mean your engine is necessarily pinging.

Of course, I'd be careful too. You might be running too lean or picked up some bad gas.

What boost pressure are you running? 91 octane is good for about 20 psi (1.4 bar) with the EVO. You will periodically get a small amount of knock when the ECU advances timming a bit to see if you are running good gas, then it figures out you are running 91 and stops trying to advance the timming.

Mine is at zero most of the time.... I do notice knocks as high as 13 - 14 After a long drive. (2-3hrs) these shouldnt be of too much concern. Most everyother time the car is at zero knocks.

I think the knocks after a long drive are due to the engine being fairly hot.

I would only worry about high knocks counts. Since alot of lower knock counts can come from almost anything as was previously stated.

Is this something that has been happeneing with your current AFC settings?

Or is this something new?

Try getting some better gas, lowering your boost a little bit and see if that helps.

Well If you knew what you were talking about you would attempt several things in your troubleshooting steps.

He would try lowering the boost to see if this reduces the number of knocks. If it doesnt than there maybee something else wrong with the car.

Maybee a faulty sensor maybee, the afc reporting incorrectly. Or it could be bad gas.

If you dont have any suggestions on how to fix an issue or to help this guy out than dont say anything at all.

Its people like you on this board that bring it down. Maybee by your rational this guy should turn his boost up to see if the issue goes away? He is having a knock issue which can be attributed to a lean condition in his engine. Turning down the boost will help better diagnose his issue.

Ha your funny.....

Ive had two moddified turbo eclispes before the evo and been strictly modding mitsus for about 10 years (sounds like you have never had and experience with this or any other turbo charged car)... and if you knew anything about the car or turbo induction you would know that if he turns down the boost and the knocks go away then he is having a possible detonation problem (These can be attributed to bad gas, lean conditions, fuel delivery and many others that Im sure you know nothing about.)

Just because most other people have not had issues detonating with stock boost levels doesnt mean that he is not. There have been several other people on this board that have seen det on stock boost levels.

Turning up the boost on an evo that is not known whether or not it is detonating is asking for trouble. You have no idea whether or not the gas/boost pressure/knock sensor/or ECU are players in this equation.

Basic troubleshooting steps to eliminate all possibilities should be used to find out where his knock is comming from.

Sounds like you like to read a bunch of stuff that you know nothing about and then spout off. Maybee you should go and turn up your boost and see what happens.!!
