Arrow Need help with trans

Sorry for the newb question but i cant find much at all with rebuilding a manual trans...Before I put my trans back together I want to check all the clearances on the shafts, I read about using a certain size piece of solder to check for the clearance but I dont know exactly where to put it in between? Between the bearing race and the trans case? And bolt it all together and the longer you wait the better? Theres got to be a DIY tutorial on it somewhere but I cant find it.. Thanks I can rebuild an engine perfect but just new with trans work...

Place the solder between the bearing race and the trans case (2 pieces, opposite sides. Bolt it together. Unbolt it, measure your solder. Find your preload/freeplay spec and do the math.

Not the best write-up ever, but there's a couple pics that may help:
