Yes you need the cable and software . I've been using it for a couple of years now with no complaints. You do know that ODBII doesn't have a knocksum output, right? If you want to log knock, you'll need an add-on like the J&S unit or the SAFCII. Neither of them log knock the way the ecu sees it though. There will be a correlation between "real" knock and knock sensed by one of the previously mentioned units, and neither (AFAIK) will retard timing based on what they see.

the OBD II doesn't log knock.... I ahve used this setup on my evo and found it to work great, you can monitor knock by watching timing... when knock occurs timing will fall flat and not climb back up... normal patterns of timing are under boost/load, timing will fall but then rise, when knock occurs the timing will continue to fall, or stay flat...

If you interested in a used Pocketlogger harness and software let me know. I'm no longer using mine, PM me

I'd just like to know exactly what software will work with pocketpc or a laptop... and what cables I would need to use this on my EVO.
