Those of you with built motors...I got some pricing questions

Welp. Time has come for a mild build

Trying to baseline some costs here, I know prices vary. My stock motor has some leaky valves, so I'm going to pull the head off and upgrade the valvetrain and deck the head. While I am there I'm going to put in some pistons and rods.

Not planning on any porting. My goal is to have the same power as I have had the past few years, but with better longevity.

What were you charged for labor on Remove and Replace for the motor? Does $1500 sound right?

I'm trying to do this on a budget, but at the same time I really want to focus on reliability. My options are to build the stock motor or buy a new motor and do a core exchange.

Not sure if building my stock motor makes it any cheaper in the end or not since I'd have to pay for more assembly labor.

Any info much appreciated

I've been looking into doing the same thing. From what I've seen the parts cost about $1400 (rods, pistons, bearings, and main studs). Labor to have it assembled at a local machine shop is $1000 if you bring them your bottom end.

You're probably looking at maybe double or even triple that in overall price. For good pistons and rods only you're probaly going to look at 1300-1600. I know when I brought my sr20 block for my s13 to the shop it was around 500 bucks just to magnaflux, deck ,and hone the block, straighten and mangnaflux the crank, and get bearing clearances. That was removing the engine myself. I think I got some new stock pistons, race bearings for main studs and rods ended up being around another 500 bucks.

Im pretty sure it would be around the same price just for the block but I could be off. Havent touched my evo motor yet since its my new daily. All in all you will be spending alot unless you do alot of removal of engine parts yourself. Good learning experience if you have a friend that knows what they are doing.

yeah i am looking into this also. Some of the deals on here may give you a better cost of just getting a finished engine.

$1500 sounds about right for the block alone. Give or take a bit. Some places will do a rod/piston combo for a deal price. Headwork, I would imagine about the same price
