As of 2013: Kelford 272 or GSC S2s

Hi All,

I'm about to get some cams (finally), and I been doing a lot of searching on the Kelford 272 and GSC S2s cams. I get a lot of info that is mostly dated 2008-2010.

I was set on GSC S2s for my stock turbo evo 9, but the shop i'm going with only carries Kelford 272s and they seem to be giving me a good price.

I read old Kelford 272s had some incidendts where they snapped.

And I just wanted to get the latest info on these two cams as far a reliability & increase of power. These will make me decide if I should just go with the Kelford 272 that the shop is offering or go an buy the GSC S2s and bring them to them, which is going to cost more.

sometimes when a shop carries a brand its because they get huge discounts on them and they promote them. go read the reviews because i was looking too and decided on the s2. the threads i found were NOT dated that far back like u said.

GSC S2s have more ramp rate for the advertised duration.

Thanks guys. I think i'm just going to order some S2s with the springs + retainers and give them to the shop. But going with the Kelford 272 was tempting because of the price.

I've had older kelford 272s for around 15k now with no issues.

Everyone I know is happy with them.

I would go GSC......lots of issues with IXs with Kelfords. I had issues with mine but I don't know if they were the cause or just caught up in the carnage. Just my opinion but to many possibilities if you ask me.

Ok i'm set on the S2s now, but now i'm reading that Kiggly Springs are the best out there, i was just going to order the HIGH REV springs/retainers from GSC, but now i think i might be leaning towards the Kiggly Springs.

I just want to get the best possible, the first time around. I would hit myself in the head if something goes wrong along the road due to not getting the right parts the first time.

I heard this a few times too. I don't know how reliable the diagnoses were. I'd run GSC's personally.

the thing is i'm not going to rev my engine above 8.3k and probably will never see anything above 30 psi. I would like some spring + retainer combo to get this job done and i don't want to get a set that is overkill, which is going to get the job done too, but will add unneeded pressure on the valve train.

Anyways anything that fits this criteria?

MAP beehive springs and Ferrea titanium retainers here, also replace your valve stem seals as well. I went with GSC seals.

Either are great cams and should be similar in performance. I've run Kelfords for 3 years now and have no complaints at all. I run Ferrea springs, retainers, and valves with a ported head. Regardless of which cams you run, make sure you do springs/retainers.

Thanks guys,

So anyone know what are the cons of running springs with rates higher than what you need?

basically i'm either going with the GSC 5040 kit which includes springs and retainers or the GSC 5039 which is only springs.

Also the spring rates on these two are different, and wanted to see if there are any cons of putting more pressure on your valve train.

But yes I'm a little picky when it comes to choosing engine parts.
