Evo VIII front LSD installed!
Evo VIII front LSD installed!
Hi All,
This is a long story, so bear with me. Sometime last year I saw Ferrarokid's post on this forum about his blown front diff. I went to see him to examine the outer case halves. He agreed to give them to me for modification in exchange for mine at installation time. After much research and many phone calls, I ordered a Mitsubishi Torsen-type front LSD for an Evo 5RS from Adam at Z1. This type of LSD is ideal for a street/track car as it has no plates or shims to deal with making it maintenance-free. The only problem with this unit is that the bolts that hold it together need to be stronger. I sourced grade 12.9 bolts in the UK. These were loc-tited and torqued to 40 ft/lbs. We then dry-fitted the diff in the outer case halves and noted where mods were needed for the diff to fit. Next, I sent all the parts to Craig Taylor at Taylor Race Engineering. He press-fitted a sleeve into each of the outer case halves and the diff was ready to go. Ferrarokid installed the LSD and filled the transfer case with Shell Helix. When I picked the car up, all he could say was "man, this car has alot of front grip!". My car has a full-on track alignment on it (coilovers and -3 front camber) so it understeers less than a stock Evo. With the LSD installed, the car went to the next level. So far I've only done power circles in a parking lot, but the front end refuses to let go. The greatest benefit is at lower speeds with tight corners so all you autocross hounds would kill for this mod. I will be track testing this setup a month from now and will report back. By the way, no new noises, no howling or clunking. Quiet as an open diff. Many thanks to Ferrarokid, Craig Taylor and Adam at Z1. They are all top shelf.
Cheers,

Bill, glad your happy with the results so far ! as far as anybody else interested in this, I will be offering this service in the very near future ! ! at this point we need to get some track time & durability tests sorted out ! ! also in the procces of getting additonal transfer cases to offer this as a "return" service where you send me your transfer case, and I send you a completed tranfer case ready to go ! ! .. or I can do the install at my facilities ! ! either way it will be a quick "turnaround " !

I am curious to see what effect it will have on the center diff... I am really interested in this as I know a bunch of us were in line to get a Quaife front diff.
Did you document the build with photos? Thanks...

Sorry, no photos. Ferrarokid did the install. Maybe he can add comments. I doubt there will be any problems with the center diff as there have been Evos with center VC and front LSD's running around already.
Cheers,

I read that article too, and wrote that comment off as wrongheaded journalistic embellishment. The real reason Mitsubishi does'nt put ABS on the RS is because real race and rally cars do'nt use it. The ABS on my car seems to be functioning fine.
