Evo sputtering problem. Please help!

Hi guys,

Ive searched around and found some good info, but I havent been able to narrow my issue down. Anyways, my car sputters when going WOT. Kind of like its spitting quickly. Also, if I try to accelerate slowly when around 4k RPMs there is brutal sputtering like the cars boost wants to kick in like crazy.

At a stop the car will sometimes go up and down from like .5k to 1.5k rpms up and down up and down for a few seconds before it stops.

I was told it could be a BOV issue so I had a new TIAL BOV installed and that didnt help much. We checked for leaks and changed vacuum lines and that wasnt it.

Any other ideas? I am thinking maybe spark plugs now?

Thanks guys I appreciate the help!

Maybe a wastegate issue? Idle control? What gear is this happening to you? This only happens to me when im at a higher gear, 4th or 5th going WOT at low rpms.

Ya it does seem to happen in higher gears....

If it is in the higher gears in lower rpm's it would be normal. seems like the turbo is creating more boost than you are tuned to run at that point so it would only seem right for it to dump the excess boost via BOV giving you the sputter sound.(The ECU is keeping your engine from going kaboom). I would assume you are on a 3-port ecu managed boost control? I believe with a MBC this would not happen but instead the car would overboost. Next time, try holding it while it "sputters" until it hits about 4k or so. i bet it goes away after that and holds boost normally.

If it isnt this....

Could be your gasket between your manifold and turbo. If there is a gap/burned through or loose bolts this could cause a sputter when accelerating too
