Which Oil Filter?
Another thing I found that is great for changing the oil in the EVO is Rhino ramps. They are plastic ramps with a gentle slope. The car goes right up on them with zero scraping. This allows you great room under the car as there is not a jack in the way, or one to worry about falling. Plus as an added bonus, it gets the oil all in back of the pan, not to one side as a jack would. I got mine from Kmart for $20 bucks. The other great find is from Craftsman, it is a filter wrenck with 3 fingers on it that grab the filter. Attaches to an adjustable wrench, so you can just ratchet the filter off. Plus it expands and contracts to fit just about any filter. I think it was $14. Two great parts to make oil changes very easy

After the first discussion on this topic, I decided to go with a Mobil 1 filter. Once I checked the reference, it listed M1-108 as the correct filter. It just so happened my girlfriend was with me in the store buying stuff to change the oil on her Mazda Protege 5 (2.0L, 130hp engine) and grabbed the same filter. I second guessed that choice for my Evo. Especially since guys were using the M1-104's from the previous discussion, without issue. After seeing the size difference of the 108 (small) vs. the 104 and comparing the output of my engine vs. hers, I went with the M1-104. Further discussion here about the size of the filter vs. output/pressure/etc. (common sense as well), leaves me feeling even more confident on using the M1-104. I've had no issues with it at all (including, but not limited to, fitment, sealing or oil system pressure).
Hm - I still don't understand what's wrong with the stock filter. Made by Denso. Comes pre-lubed and even sealed with a plastic cover. The o-ring offers a better seal than the flat rubber washers found on other filters and the filter media is probably as good or better than any other filter. I suppose it's personal preference but I just don't see that point in spending 10+ bucks for an aftermarket filter when the stock one can be had for 4-5 bucks.
none of the voting options, I use a Purolator PureOne. ...have done so on several vehicles and it's working fine. does well AFAIK on those "let's rip apart the filter and see what's in this **** hobbyist tests", unlike Fram.

I was going to buy the K&N, but after I saw the 13 dollar price ticket I could not justify what makes it so great. I bought the Mobil 1 filter and saved myself 3 bucks. Can someone tell me why I would want to pay more money for the K&N because three dollars at three thousand miles adds up real quick.
This is a little OT, but I asked japanparts.com to quote me 10 Mitsu Evo 8 oil filters and the price came out to be 23,400 yen. That's about US $21 apiece before shipping... I heard oil filters in Japan were expensive, but $21 a filter is way too much.
21 bucks? They cost about 6 at the dealer. Try this.
