You should be able to tell if it has compression just by turning it over by hand. When a piston comes up on the compression stroke it should get hard to turn and you will hear the air hissing out as it leaks past the rings. If your timing marks are correct this should happen.

I also drive a 2003 Evo. When I was doing my timing belt I didn't have anything holding the cams and as soon as I would start messing with tension adjustment, getting it to where the grenade pin would slide freely, the timing would jump at the crank sprocket making a semi-loud 'bong' noise. I had marks painted both on the sprocket and on the belt, I would look over and see it had jumped a tooth at the crank sprocket. I had to fasten both cams in place in order to finish the job.

If all that is correct, the only thing you were into that would give you a dead engine is the crank angle sensor. If that is not working you have nothing. If timing is correct the problem has to be there. Otherwise, you have bent valves.

I never heard of this problem on the Evo but on my 1992 dsm, after finishing a timing job, I had left the hatch open and the light back there drained the battery. It cranked but wouldn't start. I put the the battery on the charger, let it charge, and then tried it. It fired right up.

Deffinatly has compression when I crank It by hand it's pretty hard to crank on the compression stroke! But my hearing isn't the best I don't really hear any air hissing on the compression stroke by hand. Just also recorded a sound clip I can hear air hissing! The battery died on me while doing the timing belt so I have mine on a charger also but still nothing. I'll have to record a video of me cranking the car over or something and post it to see what you guys think. Just sucks cause I've been without a car for a month and getting rides everywhere is sucking pretty hardcore!

If you aren't sure, do a real compression test.

If you need a Comp. Tester, they are cheap and available at any auto parts store for about $30.00.

I wish I lived a little closer, I would come and do a compression test.

I could definitely use a little more help!! I'll pick up a compression tester this weekend! I'm also going to see if I change my crank sensor back to my old one if it will fire or not. Also another question do our cars have two camshaft position sensors or just one?

One crank position sensor. Do you have spark? Did you replace your crank position sensor?

Did you replace the CMP and CKP sensors with Mitsubishi OEM sensors, or aftermarket ones?

Well guys I took it to a local shop after 3 months of me trying to figure out why the car wouldn't start. Come to find out the timing jumped further than I saw. Bent some valves unfortunately . The car is still currently at the shop. Haven't had the funds to do the job until now. It is currently under the knife and will hopefully be running again by next week I hope!

Sorry to hear that man. Doing timing belts is the one thing that makes me nervous when working on a car.

Wasn't because it was wrong or anything before I attempted to fix the car myself my hydraulic auto tensioner for the timing belt failed causing it to jump timing more than I thought.
