Help With Whining (Suspected T-Case)
Help With Whining (Suspected T-Case)
Hi everyone,
I recently bought a flood-rebuilt 2004 Evo VIII GSR with 29,000 miles on it. About 2 days after purchase and getting though a bit of rough shifting and lots of stalling (new to stick), the car developed a whining sound. I've done a good bit of research into the sound, and it seems to me that it could be the dreaded "transfer case death whine." However, there is something that seems to be somewhat unique to my particular whine. It's only audible when in high 2nd gear through 5th, and it is drastically louder when the throttle is being lightly pressed. There is absolutely no whine when the throttle is not pressed and the car is decelerating. Thoughts?
Edit: My transfer case is non-ACD.

I'd say tcase. Mine is like that too- it's much louder even when the throttle is only slightly depressed. In fact, its almost inaudible when off the throttle. At first I thought the whine was only on the throttle too, but if you listen very very carefully while your driving (windows up, no music or extra noise etc) and keep your head down low you'll probably be able to hear it faintly.
That's not to say its a hopeless case. If its only got 29k on it (wow), the fluids might not have ever been changed. Or it may have been changed, but not filled to the proper level. This could cause some noise I've been told. You could try changing the tcase fluid with OEM Mitsu diaqueen:

Tcase takes .6L if I recall. Pretty easy to change theres a how to somewhere on here.

Hey
Here's a left fielder for ya disconnect all your speakers and see if the problem goes away.
I get throttle feedback through my rear speakers and it sounds like a high pitched wine that changes tone with the change in revs. No idea what causes it but any ideas would be helpfull.
