what parts do I need for head gasket job

Valves and says it all. I have here

1. Head gasket (OEM)
2. Valve cover and spark plug seals
3. Apr head studs
4. Gates timing belt

Are there everything I would need to get this job done?
Now the car did over heat a bit and I'm not sure if my head needs to be shimmed. How do I check to see if head needs to be evened out?

And also, would I have to play with Valves and shim the valves if I had my head shimmed as well?

Thank you!

I would change the exhaust and intake mani gaskets as well. Also if the car overheated you would be crazy not to have it resurfaced and risk having to do all that work over again. I learned that lesson the hard way.

Thanks for the input. Would I have to resurface the block as well or just the head?
Would I have to reshim the valves and adjust according to the material that has been removed due to head being shaved off?

Resurfacing the head does not require any additional work to the valves. No shimming needs to be done on valves that are hydraulically adjusted like the ones we have on evos. The top of the block does not need resurfaced, unlike the aluminum head the block is iron and not prone to warpage. A good cleaning with a razor blade and brake cleaner should do. Be careful of gouging though.

100% resurface the head if it overheated at all. take it to a machine shop and they will measure it for you and tell you if it needs to be resurfaced

last thing you want to do is the same job all over again

One more thought on resurfacing the head. If its the 1st time it has ever been resurfaced you have nothing to worry about. But, only have the machine shop remove enough material to level it out and clean it up. On heads that have had too much material removed there is risk of oil starvation due to a teardrop shaped oil passage that becomes to small if too much surface is removed.that can be gixed with a bit of porting to the passage. You should not be concerned with that if your just getting it cleaned up on a virgin head.

if you're going to have the head off you might as well do a valve job so that you don't have to do it down the road
