Question about airflow

Hey guys,
I was reading Import Tuner's article on the EVO, and they had to use a computer system to deal with the increased airflow that a cold air intake system provided (Apexi Power FC). Basically they stated that the factory ECU will reduce boost due to the increased airflow. My question is, is this computer system really needed when adding mods? Also will a K&N drop in filter really provide that much additional airflow that the stock ecu will reduce the boost in my car? The main reason I ask is because w/o the computer tuning the car dynoed at 216 awhp in their test, versus the 230 awhp it dynoed stock.

i don't see how the computer would reduce boost based on increased airflow...however...increase airflow too much and u'll get boost cut. 216awhp seems quite low...but as normal it could just be them(the dyno...their correction values, etc). however...a 15hp gain from tuning on our evo's is almost easy...at least in stock trim. i've had 3 intakes on my car now...k&N panel filter, RMR intake, and now the K&N Typhoon. all three of which will flow more than the stock... i got an 8hp avg with just the panel filter, and another 5-ish on top of that with the K&N typhoon right now...each tested using a G-tech...avg of 3 runs with each setup on the same stretch of road pulling through 3rd gear. never saw the boost drop from a prior setup tho....

I read that same article...My advice is to take it with a grain of salt. Most of these tuner magazines are not necessarily impartial whether on purpose or not...

If you notice, the dyno was done at the shop where the tuning was done as well. Since we were not present during their dyno sessions, then I would debate respectfully whether indeed an intake would lose HP, but all of a sudden, tuning recovers the HP and it just so happens that the tuner in the magazine that was doing the dyno did such a "successful job" of doing it and by the way, I bet they sell all the parts in the article as well.

The cold hard facts are that this is a business and the tuning shop is NOT going to do dyno sessions and install parts AND tune for free just to print the results in a magazine. Their needs to be some Return On Investment (ROI) to recoup the labor, time, and parts cost and if they can get good advertising for their tuning prowess, then that's the ROI....
