PO300 code = NO WARRANTY COVERAGE!!!

Hello all,
I've been reading about the PO300 codes a lot of evo's over 11,000 miles are experiencing. My engine decided to misfire while decelerating at 112mph at 4200 rpm with just over 11k on it. No other code beside PO300. The dealer is screwing me over by saying I did not put synthetic oil in the vehicle (I am not that stupid)... They also claim I put the wrong oil filter on it. Funny thing is that a shop that has been open longer than the dealer did all of the oil changes, and is just fit to be tied about all of this. Bottom line, the regional service manager is involved and claims I've "abused" the engine. It's a bunch of BS. Oil change at 4272 and 9246 with Mobil 1 Synthetic (I bought it myself) It's being serviced at Lokey Mitsubishi in Clearwater FL (where I bought the damn thing and traded a Spyder for it)... I just talked to somebody tonight that has a friend that works at a mitsubishi place and they are getting a ton of EVO's with thrown rods... He's going to hopefully get me some info...

There's something going on with the computer in the EVO's that is retarding the timing and it needs to be addressed... My engine is shot and they quoted over 6k to replace it. I've contacted my lawyer and they need all the ammunition that they can get. Please help...

Well posting on a public forum that your engine mis-fired at 112 mph is a good place to start with your claim of non-abuse.

I spun a rod bearing in my Evo also.... It was caused by low oil conditions... I think I had 14k miles on mine when it happened.. I worked at a dealership at the time and still didn't get mine warrantied... Now my friend has the same exact problem I had with my Evo except his was full off oil... The problem that the Evo has is that the rod bolts are WAY too small and way too weak to support the amount of power an Evo puts out... Once again Mitsu drops the ball.. Good Luck man... Wish you the best... I had no luck attourneys and all....

I am sorry for your troubles, reading about **** like this makes me want to sell my EVO before anything blows up!

I understand that the fault code that may have caused the engine failure is a Federally mandated OBDII fault code, this might give you some more ammo when dealing with the manufacture. I know from previous experience that manufacture do not like to have the Federal Goverment on there backs on issues that are obviously common among EVO's. If given some heat they might just reconsider there position on this matter.

Good luck,
Winston

Yea, I have noticed that you have to watch the oil cosumption on the Evo, it does eat more then my other cars have. You will not exactly see blue puffs of smoke, but it does eat the oil.

Something else is going on here folks... We are being fleeced by mitsubishi on this issue... This is their 'baby' and any bad press or recall is going to hurt their image...

2000 miles on an oil change does not drop 2 quarts of oil unless something is designed wrong or has failed... If the rod blows, then it's possible. I spoke to a tech at another dealer and they replace the rods on Evo's frequently. Regardless of the speed I was going, they advertise it as something other than a grocery getter, and it was at 4200rpm @ 35% load on decel... - That is called driving fast - not abuse... sorry... Driving in rush hour traffic is more destructive to an engine..

a·buse P Pronunciation Key (-byz)
tr.v. a·bused, a·bus·ing, a·bus·es
1. To use wrongly or improperly; misuse: abuse alcohol; abuse a privilege.
2. To hurt or injure by maltreatment; ill-use.
3. To force sexual activity on; rape or molest.
4. To assail with contemptuous, coarse, or insulting words; revile.
5. Obsolete. To deceive or trick.

112 mph is hardly abusing the vehicle. You could be cruising at 112 mph for who knows. For a car they advertise as a "race car", they shouldn't use engine abuse as an excuse to decline service to a vehicle. Or they should at least warn potential buyers that there is no warranty included on the car.

Threads like these makes me glad that i sold my evo while it still had low miles.

I suggest someone call NBC...that anchor man (forgot his name - Dan Brokaw, maybe) always has his 'fleecing of America' segments...I'm sure that would get Mitsu's attention...my $.02 - don't flame!

i drive my car pretty aggressively and have never had to add oil yet. mine uses absolutely no oil. i followed break in to a T, i change my oil at the dealership every 2.5-3k miles. granted i do a lot of puttering around town, i have never drag raced it or auto X'd it. i have over 14k miles on it with nary a problem. i wonder if the evos that are burning oil are ones that might not have been broken in correctly? too small of bolts? dunno, i hope i don't through a rod, but if i do, mitsu damn better warranty it, or they are going to have a pissed off customer that holds grudges.

Same here, I drive my car pretty hard without any oil burning with 3000 mile oil changes. I broke my car in by the book and have no problems yet. I have a full B&B turbo back, Profec A and Dynoflashed ECU.

Even if you follow the warranty by the book, they'll go way 'out of the book' to void it... The service guy at Lokey was over at clearwater mitsubishi before they closed and they did several things to my spyder... including broke the trans mount because they were 'power braking' it to test it after I brought it in because the thing was shaking pretty bad. They also didn't pay attention to the STOCK ground effects when they put it on the lift and bent them to hell.. they said it was like that before and not their fault... They curb checked my brand new rims (again not their fault)... they said because I was in an accident I couldn't get the torque converter replaced under warranty... the accident was a bumper replacement and didn't even touch the engine...

today I found out that it supposedly costs them over $300 to get oil analyzed... and they don't know where it's going to - or when, but that it's going to take over 3 weeks... I'm getting it done myself for $26.50 and we'll see what they come up with... Meanwhile no running EVO...
