cool to see other in the past using these billet 20G's and 9 blade turbines. I recently built myself a 20G also. but i came from a T3 forward facing setup and wanted to stick with it so i got a Kinugawa T3 in/V band out turbine housing in 8cm for a td05h, and used a 7 blade KTS 20G compressor we'll in a anti surge compressor housing, and a ( blade td05H turbine. bought both wheels, CHRA and bearing kit from Turbo lab. Made 538whp @29 PSI e85 and 457whp @24 psi pump gas, on a dyno jet. wanted more but was blowing my waste gate open. will be getting a stiffer spring for next year and seeing what 35-38 psi will do. links to my build and results:

EvoIX89,
I was looking at that (taiwan) surge cover when I put this turbo together, but was unsure if 1.) I would need it to prevent surge and 2.) on the evo x - would it clear the exhaust manifold. Turns out with the GTX style (11-blade) compressor I have no surge issues whatsoever, and that is with a base wastegate spring (turbosmart) set at 21psi! The super slick synapse bov might be part of that (not surging), but all I know is that it never has even occurred. I love this turbo so much, I have considered sending it for a BB upgrade (Owens Development). That would make a super fast spooling turbo even more fun I imagine (I have never owned a BB turbo honestly). Please do post your results as you crank the boost up into the 30's !

Is Owen development the only company that does td05/06 Ball bearing conversions? I've been looking everywhere for people who do this. Or to even see what the inside of a BB MHI turbo would even look like. I was hoping to find someone in the US that'll do it.

Also that's awesome you don't get any surge! I never tried it with the non-ported cover so I don't know if it would but I didn't feel like finding out on the dyno

I don't know of anyone in USA that does it (BB conversion on MHI CHRA). There isn't any data that I know of for this turbo setup on the EVO, which is why I made this entire thread. Other than you, I haven't even seen or heard of anyone running the 9-blade TD05 and a billet 20g (11 blade or 7+7). Those are some crazy numbers that you reported.

Ive searched quite a bit and it seems most guys send their turbos off to Owen and pay $800 for the conversion. There is another company but their website sucks and they replace the whole CHRA with some Billet Aluminum or stainless piece. Same with Comp turbo. their stock frame turbos have whole new billet CHRA's that are DBB. And thanks! i plan on make the same turbo but in a Evo 9 turbo, with a 10.5 hot side. I'm very interested to see what it would do on my motor with a ported cast manifold

@EvoIX89

The numbers listed for your 20G runs:

Billet 20G - 457whp 362wtq 93 octane 24 psi
……………………..513whp 411wtq e85 26 psi
……………………..538whp 446wtq e85 29 psi

What turbine was that again? TD06SL2 STS 9-blade ? That kind of power wasn't made through the TD05H STS 9 blade was it ?

So i decided to take my 20G apart, since my whole car is apart for a 5 speed swap, and many other upgrades, just to measure all the tolerances and inspect the wear on the bearings at 4-500 miles. Keep in mind i bought everything component balanced, and just threw it together, everything was just about brand new by the looks of it. also wanted to show that it was a TD05H 9 blade turbine. pretty crazy power to squeeze through a 49mm hole.

13 months later (again)

It has been ANOTHER year since my last post above. I drive it everyday to work and back, and try not to thrash on it everyday. I know this is a sample of one, but I have never seen a Kinugawa based turbo post that had such a long durability report with positive results. As every year, it also received several 1/4 track runs.

I stopped tuning it last June, because I was literally just constantly fiddling. So I went over half a year without even touching the tune without any issues. I just recently changed the tune to get just a bit more power. I am now running it at 28psi and it is insane.

Peace!

Where did you buy your rebuild kit for the turbo from ?
I've got a evo 8 turbo with 192k on it, and I am pretty sure it needs something replaced.

Also thank you for posting your experiment with turbos, it's interesting mixing and matching different combinations to get positive results

Thanks! I cannot be happier with the results. I cannot stress tuning though as being critical to making use of the hardware. I have made 125+ tunes for my car since I bought it in 2012. The most recent changes have really woken it up (due to SST tuning, and boost adjustments).

For street/autocross setup the 9 blade TD05 (STS) spools super quick but doesn't choke the top end as much as the MHI 12 blade. I was most surprised that despite the quick spool and high flowing 11 blade billet wheel, I never have encountered compressor surge. Not once!
