A lot of complaints here. I wonder how many complaints or maybe deaths need to happen before the government or safety group look into complaints.

These reports are not in keeping with what other countries experience. Even with track days and rally use. So its either :

(a) Abuse via dragging ... this car was never made for 5-6K launches... I see some owners speaking about this kind of launching...

(b) Manuf/design defect.

The gear material in the transfer case is not built to handle 300+ whp high rev standing starts esp with twin plate clutches etc... The shafts will snap!

Hey, killer^^^^^^^ the other countries have the REAL evo. Active yaw, Center diff and so on. The US has a washed out version, not tried and tested as the other country's are. I'll take slightly less HP, for a tried and true car. I'd rather not pay premium cash for performance, ie; evo US version, and not have it **** the bed. People are becoming believers, some of the cats that said I abused my car have changed their minds once they're stock shi started to go. It's not abuse my freind, it's poor R&D on mitsu north's part. Soon you'll realize. People are haters until they or a close freind have their cars flip on them. Cheers freinds, I hope that your cars hold up, and you are able to continue to enjoy the idea of the US EVO 8, I hope you don't have to go through what I have and many others on this board have had to go through.

Thanks RaX I think I am going that route. I have to notify Mitsu directly and by law they have one more chance to fix it. After that their *** is mine. I hope they fix it cause I really like the car. Every state is different here it is 3 times for the same porblem. I have that in the last month alone. This blows.

can someone get me the part number of the USA Evo 8's transfer case?

I would like to run a comparison with the Evo 6's viscous unit.
Thank you.

EDIT : when I speak of tried and tested centre diffs in other countries I am actually meaning the non-active viscous unit in the Evo 5 & 6 which I think may be the same one in the us evo... more research is needed. But even this unit is known to fail on extreme high HP launching....

This whole transfer case issue is really interesting. I have read about multiple people having 2-3 transfer case failures. The probability of this happening should be very low. It almost makes me wonder if there is another root cause to transfer case failure. There is no way that some one could get that lucky and get 3 defective transfer cases. I have not seen any schematics of how the transfer case hooks up to the transmission and driveline, but I would look somewhere else for a possible root cause.

How many people were using Redline fluid when their TC went out? Sounds like the factory 90 weight was put in there for a reason now...

But the instances of 2 or 3 TC's going out, that just sounds like a bad install.

Don't mod your car, take it back to your dealer, hold the mechanics hand, point to the transfer case, and let him know that this is the problem If he doesn't believe you, ask him to drain the tranfer oil, and then point out to him the metallic shimmer of the ground up gears mixed therein

Uhhmm, he is describing the decel noise, not transfer case noise, and according to MM it is "normal".

I have not been on the board much in the last several months so if it has been proven that the decel noise is actually a precursor to the transfercase going I would like to know and appologize for my comment...

That's what I figured. My car has done that since mile 0 and, now at over 10,000 miles, it's still running strong.
