My buddy owns a Performance shop here in Delaware. He is one of John Shepards sponsers. I actually called John a few days ago in reference to the entire evo drivetrain being that he speciallizes in DSM's and has a talon that runs 8.7's at 166, I figured he knows alot about AWD. I had a 10 min conversation with him and as of now all he does is rebuild these trannies for customers. There is no aftermarket fix for any parts of our tranny right now. There is no bulletproof solution as of yet. Hopefully we will see something by kaaz or a reputable manufacturer to address this problem. Obviously it can be done if a 1G can hold up to repeatable 8 second quarters. At least we can hope.

It's sort of a cross between a rattle and a buzz. Like I'll lift off the throttle, and it'll sound a little bit like a marble rolling around in a tin can (but sort of muffled). It's very subtle. The whole thing lasts for maybe one second at most?

I could have sworn I didn't have it before I put in my exhaust, but it's been like 10K miles since I put my exhaust on, so I really can't say anymore... hahah. I've just kinda gotten used to it.

But, my exhaust was loose though, and was contributing to the rattle. The lower part of the gasket was leaking but it seems to be ok now.

I'm having new clutch installed at dealer. Are there any any adjustments that could be made at that time to prevent transfer case problems?

Sort-of unrelated, what's your buddy's shop's name?

I didn't know that there were any that deal with Evos.

His shop is called Sports Compact Pro, He is currently on Kirkwood Hwy. He can get you whatever you need for your Evo, Thats where I get all my stuff. He is a good guy, really good prices on stuff. I work like 2 mins from Greenville in the Barley Mill Dupont Plaza. Let me know if you need anything for your car.

well us 3/s guys have dealt with crap tc's for awhile. the most popular solution is a kaze front diff. but you guys are lucky our problem is that getrag didn't design the case to use a gasket instead hoped that its self sealing would prevent leaking. unfortunately it doesn't in any transfer case based car they can become a problem when you're throwing x amount of hp at them instantly.

Demand for upgraded transfer case?

Well the 2 weak points seem to be the clutch (which is an easy fix) and the transfer case. Is anyone working on a solution for the transfer case? as these evo's get faster there will definately be a demand, i know i for one, am willing to get one if the price is right this summer.

What exactly is failing in the transfer case? I keep seeing people showing busted gear rings or something.. Heck yea, someone out there makes a rock solid tranny, sign me up for sure!

im not exactly sure what part of the transfer case, but i know that there isnt a widely marketed solution to the problem. some people get lucky, some dont. it just seems to be what lets go besides the clutch.

The outright failures appear to be a small number of DOA's (manufacturing defects) and the lions share of the rest as a result of hard launches at 5 or 6k with upgraded clutches. The poll we did on transfer case failures was anything other than spectacular. I think 12 owners reported broken transfer cases and I know of 3 that occured as the yellow went to green at the track.

I guess my point is that the tfc's appear to good overall with the correct combination of ugrade stages, tuning, driving techniques and luck (not getting a bad one).

I believed they said the gears are shimmed incorrectly (Which is hard to believe on a production vehicle).

There is talk of a recall. Personally, I'd hope for that because it would be nice to be able to drag the car without fear of breaking a 2500 dollar piece everytime you cut a 1.6.

Whether the stock one is a well made tfc or not is not really relevant. My concern is one built to handle gobs of power. I, like A LOT of other evom members am only a turbo upgrade away from 450+whp. With more than double what it had stock, it's only a matter of time before tranny pieces start to break. Hopefully, by the time the need rises there will be a solution.

Its eather the Driver or a factory defect! Big AL is still runing on his factory drivetrain w/no problems pulling 11.5 in the quarter. This is like the clutch posts, its usually the driver who doesnt know how to drive or doing somethign stupid. The Evo Drivetrain is very very strong.

I tend to agree. Abuse and shock kills driveline parts. If you have more moving parts (Like our cars), more stuff is going to break... Especially if you're driving it hard on sticky, prepped surfaces like the drag strip.
