engine honing/piston advice

hi guys sorry if this is a bit of a noob question, ive done everything from oil changes to replacing synchros but i havent done a lot of work with engine internals.
basically im slowly buying parts to rebuild my motor since it has 130k and im hoping to upgrade my turbo next year after all is said and done.

im looking at buying manley pistons and rods as theyre affordable and reliable however im guessing after honing the cylinders i should probably go a step up from the standard size, so instead of 85mm i should go with 85.5mm right or 86mm? just wanna double check before I buy the wrong stuff. just had my head redone so this is the last step for me. arp rod bolts and head studs will be installed as well.

if it matters heres the link to the pistons and rods

im skipping the crank as im hoping to make between 5 to 600whp and ive seen many others past that running the oem one, so unless its very ill advised to not run aftermarket ill stick to oem
thanks for any advice!

Do not buy anything until your machinist tells you too! But yes theoretically you want to stay closer to the stock clearance of 85mm.

alright, i was hoping to buy everything before hand so that the machinist wouldnt have to wait while the cars apart but i guess i guess just keeping money set aside until i decide to do everything is probably the best bet.

if i do a compression test on the cylinders would that help give me an idea on what shape everythings in? if i can get good compression i might just go 85.5 over otherwise ill play it safe and wait

also im a little new to the forums, is there a thread anywhere with reputable shops in the area, even if its as broad as midwest, east coast, etc. im probably just going to have them pull it all apart and do the work and i dont trust the small shops in my area. i think the closest/most reputable places near me are AMS and Boostin which are both about 2-3 hours away

The reason you don't buy Pistons now is because you don't know how much the machinist needs to hone. So say you buy the 85.5, but he needs to over bore to 86 because of scarring. Well you just screwed yourself. See what I'm saying? Compression test will tell you if the piston rings are bad, not necessarily how the cylinder walls are.

directly between madison and milwaukee so its about 2.5-3 hour drive. im sure boostin might actually have some parts in shop but i guess ill just have to email them and get some estimates and time frames to fit into my work schedule. it sounds like letting them pull everything apart first is definitely the best bet then haha

They'll be building my bottom end, they're reasonably priced too! Give them a call
