track / hill climb with a 3586 (or similar) + 2.4L?

I've read a few threads regarding finding the best suited turbo for track racing and hill climb style courses, but few seem to address my particular style of build, and it's 2015, not 2008, so i figured I'd start a new thread to gain some more reliable information.

I'm building a 2.4L EVO 9 motor (few stats on the build below). This car is intended to be a daily driver/weekend warrior. I live in a mountainous region with winding roads that will see snow a few months in the year. We also have a few big highways (Canada has a lot of open space lol). I wouldn't mind driving the car a few days in the winter because why not.

I would like to participate in a few hill climb events in the future. For this purpose I'm unsure if the GT35/HTA35 line of turbos might be too laggy and difficult to drive with, but there-again, given the modern technology provided by the turbo manufacturers these days, and the mid-range capabilities of a 2.4, perhaps it's not too bad a combination?

Ultimately I want to see about 450-550whp on 94 octane with relatively "average" boost (24-28 psi).

I'd be interested to hear what combinations those with experience recommend for a more versatile driving experience. I don't want to build a monster that is basically only good for 'highway moments of glory' or the drag strip.

As you'll see based on the stats, I am leaving the build open to really high horsepower figures nevertheless...

EVO 9 2.4L
100mm billet K1 crank
150mm turbo tuff rods
9.5:1 wiseco assym pistons upgraded pins
balance shaft eliminator
cosworth bearings
cosworth h11 studs
cosworth head gasket
supertech valvetrain
kiggly beehives
GSC R2 mivec cams
curt brown ported/polished head
curt brown ported intake manifold
curt brown ported throttle body
ETS 4.0" intercooler
ETS 4.0" speed density
ETS exhaust manifold (this will depend on turbo choice of course)
twin 450 fuel kit
FIC 2150
-8an feed, -6an return
RCI fuel cell

EDIT: Hmm well the 3586 does see hill climbs, no doubt. Probably one of the most famous events at Pikes Peak involving an EVO, in fact... Jeremy Foley's Pikes Peak EVO 8 ran a 3586, 0.82a/r. 2.3L build with 9.0:1, E85. http://www.motoiq.com/MagazineArticl...-Peak-EVO.aspx (don't know if this is a good example though? )

Have you considered something along the lines of the Borg EFR 8374?

Haven't considered Borg Warner at all actually - I know very little about their turbos.

EDIT: It seems that although the transient response for a turbo of this size is virtually unmatched (as far as i can tell from brief reading), the 8374 would require a custom manifold and some ingenuity to have everything fit properly, is that basically correct?

Anybody care to offer their 2c on the EFR line of turbos? It's difficult to determine online whether this turbo is part of some huge conspiracy, or is actually the second coming of Christ.

No advice on the turbo as an hta3586 should do quite well. But I would be using 156mm rods since you're using the 4g64 block...

I'm using the 4G69 block actually. It has the same deck height as the 4G63. The pistons I'm using are just a 9.5:1 87mm 4G63 pistons. Rods are stock length.

8374 EFR hype is legit. Responce is insane feels like stock turbo spool on the street. For a hill climb event it would be perfect.

Cool - you have this turbo? I will also be running R2s. Thanks for the input.

no i had it on my car (2.4 , R2 and 8374) now ive moved on to 9180 with 1.45ar. Just testing it out, the 8374 is going to be hard to beat. Loved it, but back to the point, i think it would also make for ultimate hill climb set up. And you better know how to drive cause its going to be a handful and fun non the less

I will take it slow and put some track time in for practice before I take it to any hills

Thanks for sharing your experience - makes me even more excited to go for this turbo
