Can someone clear something up for me please?

So I have a K&N Drop in cone intake... but what are the benefits? I keep reading people say how it causes the car to go leaner...but isn't that better since the car runs rich to begin with? THen there's that thing about how it retards the timing which I don't understand. Is there any actual HP gain, or is there HP loss?!
Has there been any proven results about aftermarket intakes vs. stock? How do I make the MAF sensor read normally? I've been searching...but I've yet to find a good thread about this.

Thanks in advance. Help me, I'm so confused.

Some tuners are finding that many intakes let the Evo run too lean. Running lean can induce knock. Knock will cause the ECU to pull timing and you will loose power.

Most people who are seeing provable gains from intakes are having their car tuned around their mods. Examples of this would be Buschur's kits used with their settings, custom ECU flashes and/or other engine management solutions like an AEM or XEDE with custom tuning.

From what I've read, you're more likely to lose power than gain it using an aftermarket intake unless you're specifically tuned for it. I believe that both Vishnu and Works reccomend the stock intake because it works pretty well. You might be better off getting a 3inch exhaust
