Cracked hot side = okay?

I have a old mhi housing in the garage with a crack I found after pulling it off. It's in near the wheel, which seems common.
Aren't most of them cracked anyway, we just don't know until we look?

I'll be bolting an HTA71 to it.

Post a picture please. I have one that looks pretty bad and was curious just how bad it was compared to others.

Mine also had a small crack. It'll likely be fine. Since it's off, send to CBRE for porting. It's only $120 and he opens them up pretty good..

really? everyone i've talked to won't touch it.

does porting affect spool at the cost of WHP? if so, i don't have an interest. i've going for low-end to mid-range 100%

The danger is eventually a piece of the divider wall could break off. That's a bigger crack than some I've seen. My old turbo has the beginning of a hairline crack on the divider wall.

With a 71hta your last concern is boost threshold LOL. Porting won't hurt it though. Should send your manifolds while you're at it too...lol. Porting everything will help you make more power while not working the turbo as hard (less boost)..

Email him a picture. When I emailed him mine he said he would do it. Mine wasn't cracked as bad as yours though. I ended up getting the red though, and had FP port the new MHI housing that came with the red (which I'm slightly disappointed with, $100 for just gasket matching).

Yeah, I was never a huge fan of the FP porting, which is more of a gasket match. CBRE does a good job. I used Rueben at socalporting dot com.

Either way, you can port the hell out of an MHI hotside. Same thing for the FP exhaust manifold. Personally, I'm extrememly happy with the stuff Ruben did for me. I also have a CBRE IM, just in case anyone is questioning my motives

this is a pretty normal crack in the volute... I have seen it in several turbos.. In fact I think all of them crack after a while. Sometimes a bit part breaks off..

Running like this will cost you some transient response. While the housing is off check that the WG flapper closes properly (another potential problem I have seen)...

as for porting... you can gasket match, and it is worthwhile, just do it on both the housing and manifold side..

costs you transient response...ok does it then also cause a slight delay in boost such as only getting to 20 psi by 3600 ( i run 27 psi peak 25 hold to 7000 then taper) and not full until 4000 ?

Just wondering as mine has always boosted slightly slow. And no there are no leaks in the boost charge air system

So, because of this, I had my new MHI hotside ceramic coated inside and out plus I had it cryotreated. We'll see if this helps or not in the long run. If all that doesn't work, then really, it's inevitable to see cracks in the divider wall with long term use.

no, you cant weld it... I was in the same boat as you.. .got the fp71 and found the crack in the housing.. ended up sourcing the new hotside.. good luck with that now..
Shame the new turbo is collecting dust now..

I have worked on a car with a problem like that.. and it had a crack in the manifold to housing gasket + a major problem with the wastegate flapper not sealing propperly... I woul look at that first..

My car, with a crack in the volute divider always had slightly slower transient response than a car with a good turbo..
