auto-x =either a IX Evo or something similarly small. i run an FP HTA71 and it absolutely kicks ***. at two of the three autox events i've run with it (and my car isn't even built for AX), I had FTD by 2.5 and 3.5 seconds. the third day sucked because i lost an IC coupling and had a shift cable come out of the bracket LOL.
this was on 91 octane and 355whp. here's the vid, in case you are curious:

Fp red dual ball bearing in both oem stock housings, the oem compressor housing a/r is better for faster spool up than the fp advanced port one, it robs a bit top end but nothing major. Hks 272 cams, dialed to 0 and then advance the inlet cam at +1. Short i/c pipe route of 2,5" diameter, slighlty bigger cooler than the oem one of good core, a good air filter. This turbo is bigger than hks gt2, gtx3071 and the fp hta71, it will have much less back pressure issues, and consequently much lower egts throughout its operation range but especially at higher boost levels, something of the utmost importance for an autocross setup. You can spike the boost even more during midrange for more torque and it can definitely hold 30psi to a red line of 8k rpm. If setup right it can give an excellent powerband of 2K to 8K rpm that will make bigger turbos feel small lol. Also if you wish to push a bit more cfm of air you can change the compressor wheel to an EF3 one, with no loss in either boost threshold , spool up or full boost rpm point.

OP: I'd suggest you change your first post to include your "autocross" comment. It will avoid a ton of confusion later.

a reliable one I had a HKS 7460R and it was the best turbo ever -- better than the FP green BB I got after it - and then it blew and was a POS.

Stay with the stock 9 turbo or maybe a 71HTA. A bigger turbo will make most evo drivers slower on 99% of auto-x courses. You would be better off putting the money into your suspension. Like a nice set of MCS 1 ways with Vorshlag camber plates http://www.motioncontrolsuspension.com/
