Exedy Twin vs. Comp Twin (for my application)
Exedy Twin vs. Comp Twin (for my application)
Currently, I don't see myself making enough power to warrant a triple disc, but the single that came with my car just doesn't launch for crap and sucks for high RPM shifting.
I've been looking at running either a Comp (push style) twin disc or an Exedy (pull type) twin disc with an ACT monoloc. If there's another twin disc in that price range that's better, please provide me some input.
Either or is pretty close to the same cost-wise, but I would appreciate some input. Especially if you've ran both a pull style and push style on the same car. How much power and basic mods help too.
The car has a stock longblock with cams, Evo 9 turbo, all other basic bolt ons, and Shep transmission/t-case/rear diff. It might see a big turbo and built motor in the future, but for now it'll stay the way it is. I'm just looking to optimize shifting and have a clutch that can handle the launches for now, and a few more light mods in the near future. I daily drive the car, I'm not deterred by driving a twin on the street. I used to daily a built 1g Talon with a PTT twin and I didn't think it was so bad.
I understand these are only good for roughly 600 WHP, or at least so I'm told, and that anything past that will require a triple. I'll cross that bridge when I get there.
Thank you!

I have an exedy twin in my Evo 9 (stock turbo) and a Tilton twin in my Evo 8 (fp red dbb) and both are great clutches, however I find the exedy to be easier to drive because it's a sprung compared to the Tilton that's not.
Once the tilton goes I will go with an exedy twin converted to push

You could look at the SPeedSPort carbon/carbon twin. Good for about 800 torque. I am putting the single on my 2.3 Red. And it's only $200 more than an Exedy. And yes, we sell them.
saxon, so you would prefer the push over the pull you're saying? I'm guessing you came to the twin with the push style to keep the sprung discs for streetability?
erik, that's WAY out of my price range... Though it does look really nice. The two twin disc's in question are both used with basically break in time on each, and are under a grand.
I made a mistake, the clutch isn't a Comp, but a Clutch Masters. I'm leaning towards the Clutch Masters purely for the reason that it costs quite a bit more than the Exedy, and can handle more power. However, the Exedy is appealing because of the versatility of being able to change it to a triple disc, or to a push style, or both.

Sorry. Didn't know you were looking at used clutches. It's only $200 more than a new Exedy Twin, which ain't bad for a twin carbon.

I am assuming the carbon-carbon pull clutch will drive similar to an Exedy twin...plus it holds 900 torque.
There is also a SpeedSport 8.5" billet clutch with aluminum flywheel that will be super-responsive...it holds slightly less at 800 torque.
I will ask RJ about the difference in driveability between the twin and 8.5" billet twin.
So, you're pushing a product that you really don't have a solid idea as to how well it works? Not being an ***, but I would at least personally test something before I started trying to sell it to everyone.
At the same time, there are many vendors here selling products with little to no experience with them. Hell, some don't even have Evos.

Anywho, I can't give feedback on the Quartermaster Twin other than what I have read about...which IIRC, it's kind of like an on/off switch and not the most streetable clutch.
get the exedy will last the longest and drives like stock and if you go BIG then go quartermaster, the qm is a beast but with time easy to drive. exedy will last a long time but like any clutch the more you launch it the less it lives. this is my personal experience, be carefull when listening to people most are helpful some just try to sell **** I got 45,000 out of first exedy with more than 50-60 passes low 11s , got 80,000 + 2nd exedy that one only had 3 passes at the track one 10 sec. and two 11.0 and a lot of launchs on the street. lack of track visits is what got me 80,000 outa the 2nd one. fyi qm don't like to be slipd and imo wont make it past 20,000-40,000 depending how you drive. but qm will hold whatever you throw at it and shifts nice. sorry for the long read! started drinking early tday, snow day! GET THE EXEDY you wont be sorry.
I am familiar with the single. It's going on my car. I have also talked to RJ in person. I trust SpeedSport products and have seen them take abuse on local Time Attack cars. I will ask to see if there are any local peeps running the twin so I can test drive.

The more I read, the more I'm leaning towards an Exedy twin. Sprung discs will be easier on my transmission in general, not to mention dampen some of the extra vibrations from the lack of balance shafts. I drive the car daily and I don't want to wreck the trans or clutch from using an unsprung style twin, be it push or pull.
