What is this noise? (Vid)

I'm posting from my phone so I'm not sure if I will be able to embed the video but I'll try. If not please click the link.

Short version:

Installed my engine and transmission into the car with the new clutch. Its an ACT unsprung 6-puck with an HD PP after which my car made this noise.

I took everything apart and rechecked the torque on the flywheel bolts because I thought I left them loose. They ended up being fine, so I threw everything back together and it still makes this noise. I'm pretty sure the pressure plate bolts are tight as I remember torquing them down with the torque wrench.
The sound seems to be coming from the trans case itself.

As you can see at the end of the video, all I have to do to quiet it down is push the clutch back in and let it out. From that point on it remains quiet. It seems to only do it when I let the clutch out fast and only in neutral.

The only other weird thing I've noticed is the lower dust cover no longer fits: when installed, the inside of the flywheel grinds on it, so I left it off. Not sure if that's related or not.

Anyone have this problem before?

Did you forget to install the block plate? That would explain the dust cover not fitting..

Dust cover should fit no matter what, I think something is installed incorrectly

i did, yes. mine makes it any time it's in neutral and i let the clutch out normally. it's only quiet if i let it out slowly. i didn't have this problem with the last clutch i installed. only this one.

i did, yes. i remember because it was SO fun lining that up while installing my transmission... by myself.. with only a floor jack LOL.

i agree. i've been over it 100 times.. i'm stumped.

when i rebuilt the engine, i had to use a used crank from a member here. it looked perfect, was inspected and micropolished. other than that, the pistons and rods are OEM and all else is exactly like i had it before (i had no problems then).
i did the build per the service manual. i used King or ACL thrust washers. all clearances were checked. i know the flywheel and pressure plate are installed right, etc.
it's not my first build and everything went together perfect, which is why i'm really stumped.

i'd like to think the dust cover not fitting and my noise are related so i can kill two birds with one stone LOL.

or maybe my 128k trans is just going bad

The block plate has a few small bolts to hold it to the block. If you didn't put those in, you could be hearing it vibrate.

to be honest, i'm not sure if i remember using those. i just remember putting it over the dowels. i'm not 100% sure (it was a long, drawn out process and i was exhausted LOL) but it's sandwiched pretty tight between the block and trans. i can't imagine it moving much. but maybe.

my noise definitely isn't that though. this is a heavier metal. something solid.

You need to figure out why the dust cover doesn't fit, and that will likely be your issue. That thing should always fit.

i'm hoping. it would mean the flywheel is too close to the block. which would mean that the crank is too far forward? but everything else works, lines up, and was put together right. i've been racking my brain trying to figure out what i could have missed.

i dunno what else to do other than pull it all back out of the car and start over. eek.

i made this post hoping someone would chime in with "oh.. this one time, i overlooked..." and i'd have my answer LOL

Are the ACT flywheels supposed to have pilot bearings?
Noob question I know, but I haven't really touched my flywheel in three years. LOL

No, the Evo input shaft doesn't have a snout for a pilot bearing.

that would explain why i didn't remember seeing it LOL.

i've been under the car for two days. i can't figure out why there isn't enough room behind the flywheel for the dust cover. i'm stumped unless there is something off with the crank, which i seriously doubt.

Are you 100% certain the trans is sitting square/flush on the block?
