Top mount turbo vs. forward facing!

Hey guys!

I know there is probably a thread on it, but I would like my own reference to look at when I'm in the market. Right now I'm a standard mount turbo it's a 6466 and making over 700whp, and I know I want more. So basically what's the pros and cons for power and all that stuff!

Top Mount has not real performance advantage afaik except for looking cool.

Front facing "COULD" be better from a performance standpoint but you'll need have that turbo unobstructed (aka no filter) which on city streets could kill your turbo prematurely..........

But Front facing looks cool as hell (Thats why I have that setup).

Exactly what he said ^^

Top mounts have no real performance advantages other than you might be able to squeeze a bit bigger turbo up top and also still have A/C stuff like that.

Front mount is the way to go and most efficient for sure but like he already said above you run the risk of your turbo sucking in a small child or boulder which would be a real kick in the sack. That's about the only real problem which isn't very much of a problem at all. Seen plenty of front facing turbos on the streets.

This is just my opinion
I'm not sure I'd like to give up cooling ability for "looking cool" Going to a half radiator with a forward facing kit and having possible A/C and overheating issues isn't for me. Its gets pretty warm in the summer time.

There is an Evo 9 down south that makes 900-1000+ with a standard placement manifold and its been street raced for years over 800whp. There was a period where it was raced almost every weekend. If you can keep temps down and not rattle the engine then it will live a long time.

Top mount= easier to get to the turbo and accys, more clearance for bigger frame turbos, longer runners=more top end. Easier to clear a big downpipe. sometimes have to use a small radiator depending on kit

front mount=best for getting the most out of your turbo aka right in the front and works great for forcing air into the turbo. You can either run a small filter on the streets or a blockoff to get around the rocks and debris problem. could make ac work but need a custom kit for it (yes people make them for sale). Small radiators required.

Both work great, just depends on what you're looking to do. Yes, people make power on all kinds of setups

Yes go top mount/bottom mount. You can use a full size radiator and also an intake which is a must have for some crank case catch cans (more efficient than a vent style). Also you get to run one of those fancy air filters! Depending on the manifold you keep ac also.

I wouldn't ever go front facing unless its an all out race car. Otherwise I don't see the point.

On most Forward Facing Kits -
1. Delete A/C
2. Half-Size Radiator

Top Mount Kits
1. Slim Fan/Thin Radiator

Both setups don't differ in terms of cooling as long as the radiator fan is appropriately sized for application.

Top mount has less turbo lag from my own personal experience. But more vulnerable to heat soak.

How would it have less lag? all things being equal its still getting the exact same exhaust pressure regardless of its position.

You can get away with a front-facing turbocharger but I recommend that if you have space, run an HTA86 or a smaller turbo in the original manufacture turbo position behind the radiator.

1000whp evo build

What is the best forward facing turbo kit for 1000whp that can run a cone filter?
