Do the ss housings hold up better? what are the pro n cons of each?

Pros and cons between SS vs MHI

Pros: more power and less expensive to replace if you get it setup and need another replacement

Cons: slower spool by a long shot and requires exhaust work or get the o2 housing offered

What are you talking about?

What would be the point of a SS housing on an FP Green?

The great thing about the OEM turbos, is that you're squeezing every last drop out of a housing that wasn't really meant for it and you still get the benefits of the TS.

If you have a SS FP Red or Black, you may as well just go T3 or T4 in my opinion.

What do you want? How do you want your car to behave? Do you want 600+ hp? Then a Black is your ticket.

I have a 2.3 and chose the Red with MHI housing because I still want a relatively responsive turbo (better than a Black but with more power than a Green).

A 2.3 flows 15% more than a 2.0. 2.4 will handle 20% more air. So, a Black may be a good combo for that car...but for me, even with the 5% more volume, I am not sure if the Black would have the spool/response I'm looking for in a fun street machine.

But the question is, what are you looking for? Look at Black and 2.4 dyno sheets and see if you like the way the chart looks. For a DD, especially look to see how early torque comes on.

For a black, you should see it spool fully at about 4500 rpm (5000 on a 2.0).

For a red, you should see it spool at about 4000 rpm (4500 on a 2.0).

THat's my 2 cents.

FWIW, my turbo sees 20psi at 3400 rpm. I use that around town a Hell of a lot more than I would 600whp @ 7500rpm.
It's all about how you want the car to feel.
I autox and road race, so i like a useable power band that hits as soon as I crack the throttle open.
Others like a sudden rush at the top end because it feels faster.
Decide how you want the car to behave, then go from there.

You guys just havent seen good results from these turbos. You can have the full setup for less than 2k and make plenty of power. Anything over 700 is over kill on the street imo. If i wanted a track car id go t3.

With that SS housing on a Black, you're only at 250 tq at 4000 rpms. Turbo doesn't begin to peak torque wise until 5500.

Personally, I'd rather have 500+ rpms in spool. You do have almost 3,000 rpms at 500 torque though

Is that an HTA Black or an HTZ?

That's why I chose the MHI Red. Close to 600whp with decent spool characteristics.

Everyone wants different things

We could have made close to 600 tq on the 2.3 but i chose not to. I had a 2.3 fp green that made 519/527 for 3 yrs. this black still feels almost the same except keeps pulling.

Im not gonna lie Im on a stock block and Im sorta regretting buying the SS Black and probably if I could redo do a Red. But for the price are you kidding? the turbo was a grand the oil line was 150 bucks the o2 housing was 190 bucks and I got a wastegate for 90 bucks. Stm intake was only 150. Im not seeing how these cost anywhere close to a T3 set up now that FP has released the o2 housing. Cheapest new T3 kit I could find was 3300 from MAP. I have way less then 2k in my fpblack set up.

In a JB setup. Add over $1k for ball bearing.
