Good Luck with everything Kaj
Where there is a will there is a way.

I know a few evos that live around me with Big turbo kits and are quite flashy.

Kaj just doesnt want to go with a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy ha

Quote: You can make plenty of power and still pass visual, if you are smart. You may need to swap some parts for the actual smog appt.
When I say "plenty" I mean 500whp or less. Not plenty for everyone LOL
I haven't had many problems passing visual. The only issue is with the OEM cat, which I can put back on if necessary. However, at least in LA, you should be able to find some places that are less "strict."

Why not just sell it, and buy a true stock appearing turbo?

I've even had smog techs look at my carb legal intake, and then fail me because they couldn't find a matching serial number on my air filter.

I also had the problem you are facing with my stock frame 71hta, odly enough only when I spray painted the compressor housing flat black with exhaust paint did techs stop bothering me about it.

Speed Density, E85, VTA BOV, EGR deletes, they can all be done at a legit place. It just takes some persistence and flat black paint.

California Smog Tips:

Wear a dress shirt, and not the type that has dragons and skeletons on it.

It's crazy, the hoops we have to jump through. LOL.

I can understand the catalytic converter, etc... but stuff that doesn't matter shouldn't. And getting hassled for parts that are stock because they "look fancy"... never mind. LOL

I think if a car passes the sniffer clean, that's all that should matter, as long as nothing on the car dumps to atmosphere.

But i digress.. I'll be modding the turbo this week while the turbine housing is out for porting and coating.

Wish we knew if the 73HTZ would accept the 73HTA housing. I'd love to trade you for my MHI housing with just the FP Stamp, lol.

Gotta love South Carolina and no emission crap to deal with.

Call FP and ask. But I'm pretty sure the dimensions are the same...

I'm thinking the FP intake with the logos scratched off may work. If I let it get dirty and run it with the stock air box...maybe?
If not, I'll borrow my friends AEM intake.

If you are wanting to keep the "stock box" look, I remember running across this thread years ago. Check out post #4 where the guy actually cut the bottom of his airbox out for the filter... I'm sure you could get a good ETS intake and pipe and powder coat it Matte Black and it'd hide good in there.

Nice! I was actually looking for that thread, thank you. Experimenting with an air box is definitely one of my plans. I just gotta find a cheap one, in case I ruin it lol

stock airbox for sure. The more boring the better. Most smog guys arent dumb, they know one of the first things people mod is the intake. If thats stock it is going to really make an impact on how much they will be looking around for other things. Also throw in an OEM Recirc valve, I use the plastic one because it looks extra crappy. Pretty much anything shiny, including OEM pipes i have painted matte black just in case. I also had to put black electrical tape over the samco logo on my black replacement intake pieces because they where failing me just on those.

My intake, dv, IC piping, couplings, etc are all stock. No problems there. Well, the intake will be. I'll sand off the FP logo.
FWIW: Amber @ FP hooked me up with pricing on one of their silicone intakes, as their way of saying sorry for the compressor cover mix up.
Is it wrong that I'm kinda happy because of how the turbo is going to sound? LOL
