Stealth Airbox Mod

Ok.. I discovered I can have the best of both worlds, Fresh cool air, and a large open element air filter.. In addition, You would be hard-pressed to tell that this engine compartment was anything but stock..

Here are some more pics that show exactly where I cut the airbox:

Ok.. here are a few details so you can make your own... Basically you need a cutoff wheel that is small so you can make clean cuts and corners.. Cut out the entire bottom portion of the airbox except for the mounting tabs (That bolt to the brackets underneith)

Now, at speed you have the advantage of cool air being ducted to the air filter from the stock location, it doesnt restrict airflow should the engine demand more flow, it can be drawn in from the bottom.

I came to this little mod because I discovered a low pressure area where the air filter is, which means at high speeds and high RPM the engine can get starved for air.

One side effect is that Every aspect of a custom air filter would be hidden from view.

Yes, the car doesnt feel as starved for air nor does it stumble at part throttle anymore at higher speeds.. I did it for looks more than function, but it in no way adds any additional restriction because the air can still get around the box if need be..

Pretty slick looking there MJ That's pretty much like how the HKS Kansai evo's carbon box is with the open bottom. cool.

Yeah, I was gonna throw mine away because it cracked when I was removing it back in the day when I first got my Buschur filter kit.. But I figured I can buy another spare box from the dealer if I needed to get the old box back on.

And with the fresh air the part throttle stumble is no longer there (I mentioned it before, but I can now verify it)

Woah, just saw your signature.. 12.2 at 113.. I ran a 12.42 at 112 with a 1.9 60'.. I don't have the cams yet.. How much do you figure they helped you? I'm doing the intercooler/fuel/induction mods before I tear into the motor.

Just wondering....I noticed that the stock intake, although it's "cold air intake" is blocked by the hood itself. Now how does this work as a "cold air intake"?

Its actually not blocked by the hood, if you peek up under the area it actually has space, its in a high-pressure area of the nose which means air is forced into the snorkle. I initially thought the same thing because the weatherstripping looked like it blocked the opening, but it doesnt.

It's more of a 'ram air intake.' Air still gets pushed up in the radiator vents, to feed the intake. The intake will suck in air, regardless.
