Bang for $ - cams vs turbo upgrade on evo9

So my Evo 9 is pretty much has full bolt ons, stock motor. made 300 /290 on a mustang dyno.

I'm debating between doing cams or a fp green for my next mod.

Which would give me a better bang for the buck on hp ?

Lets just plan on doing both at the same time & tune it just once

Both is not off the table, just not sure if the stock bottom end could handle both. Plus I'd only like to do one or the other for finanical reasons right now

The fp 71hta is on the table, what kind of gains could one expect from that upgrade alone ?

I figure some kelford 272s are good for ~30 whp?

Turbolab also has some basic upgrades comparable to the fp 71 I'm considering

stock bottom end will hold 500whp/350-400wtq

cams and a reasonable size turbo will not hit the limit, but you'll need all the supporting mods to go with it (fuel pump, injectors, springs, etc)

What are your long term power goals and how will the car mainly be used? Planning your mod path out (all the way) can save you a ton of money by not duplicating steps over and over.

Also, is E85 readily available where you live?

hks 7460 kai or fp71 + gsc S2 + valve springs (or s1 with stock springs), 1000 cc injectors, warlbro 255 and 3 port solenoid, SD tune should max out the stock block without breaking the bank.
Larger IC is advisable...

Skip cams until you are on a bigger turbo.

No e85 in my area.
only reason I've got the itch to do the cams is I'm due for a timing belt soon anyways, so that got me thinking.
But once I added up all the costs for cam and springs I could just buy a fp green or hta71.

Car has a upgraded IC and walbro 255 already. And an injector upgraded is in store either way

Goal for the car is to crack 11s, even if it's 11.99 lol

What would one expect for hp gain on a hta 71 over a stock Evo 9 turbo ?

My tuner said SD tune won't pass CT emissions, I've passed in gm vehicles in SD so it surprised me to hear that, I used to just set the maf to not report and it would pass without issue.

For drag race, you probably want something bigger than 71HTA or FP Green. Maybe consider a Blouch 2.0XTR.

I don't want to sacrifice to much end as it will primarily be a street car. But performance wise my ultimate goal would be to hit high 11s.

Blouch 2.0 is still very streetable. Search CBRD BBKB results, they are basically the same turbo.

I vote for having FP build an MHI housing RED from a core turbo. You don't need cams/springs and can make 500whp with zero issues on E85. With a solid tune and good fuel it would be fun and last forever there.
The red will cross 20psi by 3800-4000 on a mivec car and go to 8000 like a champ. The green seems to come up and then fall (MHI housing ) since it has a smaller turbine wheel. I feel like the red is a very well balanced turbo for these cars. You can daily it, auto x, road course or drag it.

Just make sure you make a list and get the supporting mods correct. The Red is capable of making 600whp also. On a dynojet

I ran my car hard at 500whp on stock everything for over a year before putting in a 2.2 engine. I changed my final drive to the taller 4.11 and the car lost alot of snap on the 2.0. So I wanted to build a better engine and be able to max that turbo out. The bigger, high compression engine makes the car drive really well all around.

So what you guys are saying is cams aren't worth the $ and just spend the money on a better turbo ?

The way I see it both need the same supporting mods, cams and springs are about $1000 and a fp green is upgrade about the same, maybe a little more for a red.

E85 is not a option, car will be on 93

I do not think FP offers new MHI housing Green/Red/Black any more. I think they can still make them if you supply a good condition 10.5 MHI housing though.

The Blouch 1.0/2.0/3.0 comes with a new MHI housing.
