So I purchased a used FP black , seller claimed it was rebuilt less then 1000 miles ago. Lol

Has some pretty bad shaft play, looks like the wheel touched the housing slightly to .

How bad is it ? I'm debating on filing the PayPal claim or just dealing with it and having FP do a rebuild for $400 ( hopefully not more ??)

 

That looks pretty normal to me. All turbos will have up and down shaft play with no oil pressure being supplied. Personally I would run it and not think twice about it. If you're really concerned though, just get an opinion from forced performance. They'll know for sure if it's ok to run or not.

 

Thats probably 2x the normal radial play I would expect going by the typical rule of thumn of a fingernails thickness. Any axial play?

 

Ya I figured for $100 I'll let FP look at it but I just want to see what other think since I'm really anxious to know.

There is very minimal in and out movement


All I have to compare to is my stock Evo turbo that has 75k on it and less play then this

 

Yes, for sure, send that in. Does not look or sound right

But, from what Ive read, some Turbos have the following specs: .001-.004 radial play / .012-.024 axial play

And you noted, the blades have touched the housing. That is no good for sure. The axial play must be well over .024

 

Yea i was gonna say get it rebuilt.
Its so sloppy it contacts the housing.
Next is big chips on wheel.

 

That's a lot of play for a turbine wheel. When brand new, the Garret GTX's don't have any play, what so ever. So to see that level of play is alarming.

 

While the turbo shown does have excessive shaft play. You stating that new Garrett turbo has absolutely zero play is false. All turbos have shaft play. If there wasn't any play, there would be any room for a film of oil to develop between moving parts.

 

We have 3 Garrett turbos at the shop. They are all brand new in the boxes. They have absolutely no play in the shafts. There is probably a microscopic amount to help develop an oil film as you state, but what play there is is completely undetectable from human hands through the "wiggle" test.

Q. How much shaft play should my dual ball bearing turbo have?
A. The Garrett full ball-bearing turbo is designed to have clearance between the bearing cartridge and center housing for hydrodynamic damping in addition to the internal clearances of the bearing cartridge itself. Hydrodynamic damping uses the incompressible properties of a liquid (oil in this case) and the space around the bearing cartridge to dampen the shaft motion of the rotating assembly. When the turbo is new, or has not operated for a long period of time allowing most of the oil to drain out, the rotating assembly will move more in the radial direction than a typical journal-bearing turbo because there is no oil in the center housing. This condition is normal. As long as the shaft wheel spins freely and the wheels don't contact their respective housings, the assembly will function properly.

 

 

to answer OP. blades should never touch housing. turbo needs a rebuild.

 

Thanks for posting this video , I always thought my my bbk-b had excessive shaft play because off the way people over exaggerate it , but mine seems to be as your video describes.

 

would not run that turbo like that. get it rebuilt man and have peace of mind instead of hoping it will be fine.

 

Better to rebuild a turbo rather than the engine when it blows. Best of luck m8. 400 sounds better than 4000 Imo ...
