Question egt guage install?

What's up everyone, I just wanted to know for the people who have installed egt guages did you drill the manifold or where did you put it. The directions say as close to the turbo as possible but to do that I will have to take the turbo off and drill the manifold so no chips get to the turbo. I was told by lancershop.com to drill with the car running and the pressure would drive "most" of the chips and shavings out but I don't think I like the sound of that. Is there anywhere that is a little easier to install while still being effective? Thanks in advance for the feedback.

I have my egt probe on the manifold. drilled while the car was running. so far, i don't have any problems.
you will see all the metal chips/debris shooting away from the manifold when a manifold is drilled while the car is running.

silver, I heared the temps are somewhat different, and its better to have it in the manifold....but it works for you?

Most owners install the thermocouple on the number 1 exhaust runner about 3" out from the block. Drilling with the engine running is one method and removing the exhaust header is another. Keeping it on the number 1 runner will allow comparisons with many other owners.

Having an egt after the turbo will give you reading 100-300 degress difference. On the manifold you will get more response out of the gauge along with accurate reading. Just follow evomoto's instruction and you will be good to go.

Yeah, a couple inches off in position could be 100 - 300 degrees of difference. Where I have always put the EGT probe is cylinder 1 (runner 1) because that's the hottest cylinder no more than 2 inches away from the block.

i have my probe in the manifold. just becafeful while drilling because its hot. wait til you pentrate and you'll feel all that exhaust gas. also spray the hole with wd40 and then drill so the bits stick to the drillbit. goodluck and safe drilling.

took me 4 drill bits.

One word of advice someone gave me is to have someone there with you holding a vacuum over the drilling so that the metal shavings get sucked up in addition to the engine running.

I took mine off just to be on the safe side to drill and tap it. The stock manifold has a perfect place for the probe on the first runner.
I used the Autometer Comp Plus probe and the it fits perfectly, just long enough. Here are some pics.
