Trans Swap: Evo X trans in Evo 8/9

It appears that the evo x 5 speed transmission is superior to the evo8/9 transmissions. Has anyone ever swapped the Evo X trans onto a 4G63? Does anyone offer a kit for this?

The VIII/IX 5spd holds up to anything. Why would you need something better?

The synchros are a more modern design in the X. That being said, the X trans won't bolt up to the 4g63. The X trans, tcase and 4b11 does fit in the CT9a. Mitsu ran it in WRC for testing back in the day.

not really... the only good thing about that engine is the double mivec.. the rest is a potential pile of problems and ecu is too complex for its own good..

Gearbox is not nicer to shift than the VIII/IX 5 spd.. and the ratios are nothing to write home about..
Also, X gearboxes had major central diff problems with pins wearing out prematurely..

Thanks for the info.

Here's one review of the X trans with some comparisons to the VIII/IX trans: http://www.jackstransmissions.com/pages/evox-review

Better cylinder head (once ported), double mivec, 4 bolt mains, lighter weight.

X gearboxes are definitely of a better design than the CT9a. They also no longer have the center diff pin issue. That was 08's and 2010's...

if we are doing a list, lets not forget weak block, short rods, exhaust manifolds that crack every 30K miles and weak valves that need upgrading when going for better cams.. ...

contemplating a full engine swap because the gearbox has better 4th synchro and some linear bearings on shift rods is a bit much IMHO.. Still needs better gearing tho..

Uhm... what?

Obviously a statement from somebody that doesn't actually tune them. If you think the ecu is too complex, A). I'm sorry it feels so complex to you. B.) Don't try tuning a modern MED ECU, they make it feel like the Mitsubishi ECU is a abacus.

I actually do tune them from time to time and I agree with you.. I wasnt very clear.. my point was that it is very complex from a stanpoint of someone doing a complete engine swap.. after all, would you go to all that trouble just because of few minor improvements in the gearbox (and a whole lot of new problems with the X engine)

I wouldn't do a X swap and keep the OEM ECU, I also just wouldn't do it. Both engines have their own issues. And it would be a lot of work for close to the same result. I simply said the X trans wont bolt up to 4g63, but the whole X engine/trans/tcase will fit in the CT9a. I wasn't saying to actually do the swap lol

the X trans isnt worth the headache of any kinda swap work. the changes made to trans are nice tweaks. some of them can be added to the 8/9 trans during a rebuild. my opinion is the evo 8/9 trans is nothing short of amazing when it is paired with a nice clutch. the devil in the details is a good clutch makes any trans shift well. a lightweight disc is FAR more important to any mod you can do to the trans in an effort to make it shift good.
