arp 1x1 method

I am going to install arp headstuds with the 1x1 method. my question is when I install the first stud do i torque it down to 30 then install the other studs at 30 then 60 then 80, or do I torque the first one down to 30, 60, 80 then install the second stud and torque it 30 60 80 all indvidually. I know usually you do 30 60 80 on all when you remove the head, but im not sure the process for the 1x1 method

I would go all the way to 80 on each stud as i went. since you are doing singles, you dont really have to do it in steps. the steps are only when youre doing a whole head worth to keep it evenly preloaded. It wont hurt to do it in steps though.

that process is for burnishing the threads on new fasteners. I question the utility in it, but its not hard to do.

analysis paralysis. just go do it.

I did 1x1 method. Replaced them in the order of the torque sequence in the manual. Torqued to 70ftlbs on install, then did a final torque to 80ftlbs.

so you took one out, put one in and torqued it to 70ftlb then 90ftlb or you torqued it to 70ftlb and moved to the next then at the end redo all of them to 90ftlb? how long has it lasted and how much boost you running?

Torqued to 70, moved on to next. Final torque to 90 once all were switched. I did this back in February 2014, the car had about 17k miles on it, the next day my car was tuned on the stock turbo on E85 making 400whp/400wtq. It has been making the numbers in my sig since about June 2015/35k miles. Car now has 53k miles. Boost is currently 32psi tapering 28psi.

One thing to think about is that boost doesn't effect cylinder pressure nearly as much as ignition timing.

Also worth noting, Abacus made 600whp on his completely stock Evo 9 engine (cams, head bolts, bottom end, etc) on the same turbo I have. Good tuning goes a long way, and head studs aren't exactly necessary.

Most of these threads waaayyyy overanalyze the issue. your post should be the answer to the entire subject.

Correction, I final torqued my head studs to 80, not 90. ARP only class for 80, no reason to go tighter, all you're doing is over stretching the stud at that point.
