Quartermaster 8 leg question

I recently bought a used 8 leg off my friend who totaled his evo 8. The clutch only had 800 miles on it when we took it out. Finally installed it in my evo 9 and something just does seem right. I never had a twin disk before so its all new to me but aside from the chatter when the clutch is pressed it makes a terrible grinding sound and it seems to have 0 forgiveness.

Question 1: Are these clutches normally extremely grabby where its almost impossible to slip them? If I'm aggressive trying to leave from a stop it seems like I get drivetrain hop.

Question 2: What can the sound be and how can I potentially fix it?

I try not to let the noise get to me but it is beyond loud and sounds like my car is falling apart. It doesn't matter if the car is parked or moving and gets louder as the rpms go up.

The video size is too large to post so here the link:

Any help is greatly appreciated

I never driven on a quartermaster clutch but from what I heard they are extremely grabby. Like an on off switch. I got an exedy wasabi twin clutch and have the same problem. It's rough driving on the street especially in traffic and it seems to get worse after a day of drag lauching at the track.

Check out this tread

they talk about using a clutch accumulator off a 2g eclipse. It should help smooth out clutch engagement. I'm going to try this on mine just waiting on parts.
i don't know about the noise. Multi plate clutches are noisy but i never heard anything i would classify as a terrible grinding noise. If it really loud something definitely wrong. If it's a faint noise it might be normal. I remember when i frist drove on that clutch i thought something didn't sound right either. I been driving on it a few years now and haven't had any problems.

You put a 100% race clutch in your car. All of that is normal. A pedal stop will help with the clutch. Rpm is your friend 3-4000 rpm to take off.

I drive mine on the streets and it just takes some getting used to. Uphill use that parking break trick. Hope that helps.

Do you have the race 6 hub version or 8 street version. I have the 8 and it sounds exactly like that. It's your clutch spinning it's normal. And these clutches GRAB! there is NO slipping this clutch it has stock feel but grabs like a fat kid in a candy dish on halloween. It sounds like a dying whale when taking off its normal. It's a hydrolic throw out bearing. This clutch handles 600tq I believe so don't launch on it unless you have enough tq to pull thru it or you will probably break something. It's a twin disk they are noisy. But it shifts like butter in high rpm.

I'll definitely be giving the 2g accumulator a try as soon as I find one.

I have the 8 leg version. I kind of figured the clutch would be a pain in the a but the sound had me a little worried. It didn't make that sound when it was on my buddies car and I only found a couple videos on YouTube but no one ever commented on them. I'm making just over 540hp and 430tq on pump gas but still feel like I'll break something if I launch the car. So for now she remains a roll car lol.

btw. I was stuck in traffic once and hated life

This clutch is ABSOLUTE garbage to drive on the street. I had the 6-leg and 8-leg both when I was mostly taking my car to the track. Don't even try to make this thing driveable with accumulators, pedal stops, etc. you're just setting yourself up for failure. IT'S A RACE CLUTCH ONLY. Go get an Exedy Triple and you'll be way better off. They still make your car sound like a tractor but atleast it lasts awhile and is way easier to drive.

I ran exedy twin setups fora while in al it's all my cars. My evo currently making moderate power on a built 2.0 with an FP HTA green ON 93 pump. I went to the 8 leg race version for a while and at first I loved it. The shifts at redline were amazing. Downshifts were quick and all was happy. Then I settled into driving it daily and it was still livable. Then as time wore on with the clutch itself, I hated driving the car. Grabby isn't even the word. And if you develope any hot spots, forget it. First gear engagement was rough, chattered and shook the entire car. I could live with the chatter between the discs on clutch in but the chewbaka cry on each uptake from a start got old. If you are racing the car and launching from every stop, then it's awesome. But if you DD the car, I would look elsewhere. Unless of course you have 600+ torque to the wheels and require such a clutch option. Even still, there are other options. But if you built a race car and need a race clutch, then sorry. If you have a street car that you think needs a race clutch, believe me, you don't.
This will contradict a previous review I may have wrote but, I have since yanked the QM out in favor of another exedy twin. Happy motoring.
