Exhaust loudness list
Im running the tanabe medallion touring exhaust ---recently had to replace it with new, I cut out the resonator and put in the vibrant untraquiet at a slight angle. Doesn't hang down low--then Im not lowered that much on worx springs. Had it welded in, very quiet under 4k in any gear and you can whisper at 3k in the car and hear fine---exactly what I was after...at 4500rpm its letting you know its alive and well. No drive shaft issues or rattles.
As a catback mated to the oem downpipe & cat, it was the perfect sound note and loudness . This is coming from a guy who hates exhaust sounds . Now once I put on a downpipe and resonated testpipe it was game over for my preference.
I know the Evo is a "raw" sports car, but I decided to compare and review my cousins e92 m3. His exhaust setup is not obnoxiously loud exterior wise but more than I like. Sitting in the car driving around I don't really hear the exhaust that much at all . If I did here it , it sounded like it's coming from the distant rear. With the Evo on the other hand it's different. If your 1 decibel (maybe exaggerated decibel number ) over stock I feel like the exhaust sound is not coming from the rear but like it's next to me all around inside the cabin. Its almost like I can't pin point if it's the rear or front .
So I started to look inside the trunk under the lining/panels etc.. and his car has maybe 1/2 inch of cotton or wool sound suppressing fabric . I'm pretty sure it follows all the way inside the cabin under the floor carpeting. So what does our Evo have under the carpeting ? Pretty much nothing. So I'm guessing this is why our exhausts seem so loud in cabin and sometimes too much to handle compared to other cars with same exterior loudness exhaust but sound quiet in cabin .
I had the Tanabe Medallion as well . Just so you know it tapers down inside the muffler . I cut up some card board prices and kept sliding in to see which internal diameter it is. If I remember correctly it was around 2.65 inches from the tip side.

Recently put in the Buschur Magnaflow catback with the STM Ultraquiet Resonated testpipe and it's significantly louder than my previous setup of: RRE Stealth catback with a non-resonated testpipe. By significant I mean my older setup didn't drone at all and sounded a bit louder than stock. New setup is very throaty and deep sounding, but does drone around 3k rpms especially on the highway.
Drone is relative though - it's not THAT bad to where you can't have a conversation, but it's just loud lol. Loud in a good way.
And I'm fully aware that Evos are just loud cars. Hope this helps.
