I think it was the C4 Corvette. Whichever one it was, when in development the test drivers were popping engines left and right on the test track. They tried various pan designs to no avail and were thinking they'd have to go to dry sump when somebody tried synthetic oil, then a new product on the market. Well, they didn't know why but it fixed the Corvette. I think it was the second car on the market specifying synthetic, the first being a Porsche. The story is the idea came from Smoky Yumick who had discovered the same effect in Nascar.
