Trying to honestly keep the build as low cost as I can, as I won't be making much power. If anything maybe sometime in the future 350-ish. I don't plan on going outside of my Evo IX turbo, and if it fails, the HTA71 would be the max I go. Unless there is really a good reason as to why I should go with upgraded Rods/Pistons.

E85 isn't available here, so the 9:1 compression I don't think would be too wise. ( I know it's all in the tune, but I do want longevity with this motor - as in a few years when I get my own house, the car will be taken apart and refreshed completely ).

9:1 compression is basically stock. Stock is 8.8:1. I certainly wouldn't go lower than stock.

So with trying to stay in budget and with keeping in mind that I will not be making more then 350WHP-400WHP MAX ( If 350-400 was ever achieved it would be on E85. I doubt I will ever get near 400. Probably 330-ish realistically ), I'm currently looking at this:

Pistons:
WISECO FORGED PISTON: 4G63 EVO VIII-IX | 9.0:1 ( Pulled over STM site )
Link

Rods
Manley 4G63 H-Tuff Steel Connecting Rods ( Also from STM site )
Link ( Part# 15022-4 )

or

EAGLE H-BEAM CONNECTING RODS: MITSUBISHI LANCER EVO VIII & IX #19719 ( Extreme PSI's site )
Link

Crank
Since there aren't any shavings, I'm going with the assumption that I can re-use my crank.

Still looking at options/searching.

Eagle hbeams will be fine more than fine. They can handle 570wtq...

ExtremePSI sells the Wiseco HD's for the same price as STM is selling the full round piston. The HD is a better piston.

.

Not until it's been measured properly by someone who knows what they're doing.

Great find. The extra cost for the HD version is worth it?

I assume you are referring to this one?

Yes, that one.

And, yes, it is. They are a lot stronger.

I appreciate everyone's help so far. You guys have been awesome.

It seems really over kill for my setup, but so far it looks like my build will include 1400 Wiseco HD Pistons ( likely 9.0:1 to be safe as I think a 9.5:1 would be pushing it on pump. ), and EAGLE H-BEAM CONNECTING RODS.

Crank is going to the machine shop as well and is going to be looked over. Only going by assumption that it'll be re-usable. Hopefully it'll just need a micro-polish and no cutting.

Def stick with 9:1 if you want it to make decent power on pump gas.

When the machine shop decks your head and block, make sure they tell you how much was removed so you can go with a thicker head gasket to get that combustion chamber volume back.

You have an Evo 9, I also wouldn't hesitate to put a set of GSC S2's and appropriate valve springs in (GSC part number 5040). They will really help wake the car up on pump gas. Especially with a turbo upgrade. Thanks to having Mivec, they can be made to idle very smoothly.

Hi Mate.

I seem to have the exact same noise as you and coming from Cambelt side too.
Did you manage to isolate the problem with yours ?

Thanks
Gav

Hi there!

Sorry for the lack of updates, all though I have nothing good to really report.I went ahead and ordered a brand new short block from Mitsubishi. Swapped it, and the noise is still present.

What I will say though, is since the swap of the Short Block, when getting into boost, there is a much LOUDER second sound I am hearing when getting into boost at all. When the MIVEC is unplugged, that additional loud garbled noise goes away under boost. So I know I'll need to replace the MIVEC Gear to resolve that issue. But my loud ticking still persists.

A bit frustrated at the moment, but once I calm down, I'll post a bit more details / video.

I didn't bother to re-read through, so this may have been done. And I'm a little late to this, but you mention the noise went away when unplugging injector 1.

Did you ever check to see if the injector was making the noise? Did you check the manifold for cracks on cylinder 1?

Pull the #1 coil pack instead, if noise persists, its the injector. If not, I am clueless.

Thanks for the reply. The issue isn't the injector. You can almost hear a tapping coming from the head itself. Me personally, I am either leaning towards the MIVEC Gear itself, or a bad possible case of lifters. The MIVEC needs to be replaced regardless though due to how terrible the sound it makes ( different sound ) when boost comes on. Unplug MIVEC, and that noise goes away. The ticking remains though.

I parked my car with exact identical noise,
back story - days prior I changed my valve cover gasket, it was leaking pretty good, was low on oil maybe just above the first fill line, filled it up with penziol 10w30 usually use the mobile one variant,

So 2 days passed by no issues, got on it and was looked outta gear for a split second, rev limiter, turned, the radio down to process what I just did, and low and behold this exact sound,

And I towed it to storage and then deployed 2 days after.
Granted I've assumed and prepared for the worst with spun rod bearing,

Will be going with a 2.4lr locally built

Hope all works out,
